Rye Beach

Reviewed By Oldjack - Greater Melbourne, Australia

We take for granted the scenery along the coastline on the southern cost of the Mornington Peninsula and so too many of the ocean Beaches such as Rye, Gunnamatta and St Andrews. Each have great views and rolling surf, sand dunes and great walks. Rye is probably the best swimming beach of most of them with good wide stretches of white sand although there are cross currents and dangerous surf. Go for the beautiful scenery no matter what the weather.

As we live in Sorrento, we qualify as ‘frequent flyers’, as we use this service often to travel to the other side of Melbourne, the Bellarine Peninsula. It cuts out the traffic problems of the city and is a wonderful forty five minute relaxing journey. Cars are of course moved, but foot passengers as well can enjoy a leisurely comfortable trip, with a cafe on board, free wifi and the opportunity to maybe see dolphins ( they love the bow wave!) and an occasional whale sighting.

We did not like the communal aspect of the locker rooms but lucky for us we didn't have to endure the crowds for long because we booked a private bathing experience and a beauty treatment. In the quiet room delicious herbal teas are provided before and after the treatments. The dimmed lighting and candles were a lovely touch and the Seating was comfy. An indigenous flora smoking ritual was performed at the end of my beauty treatment making it an experience to remember. I felt light as a feather when I walked back to the car and my skin was glowing the next day. I have very sensitive skin and this was a concern and the beauticians customised the ingredients to suit my skin and I had no adverse reactions to any of the products. While I was relaxing after my treatment the beautician came out to see me and gave me some skin care advice for my skin type. My partner thoroughly enjoyed the private hot Springs and he felt totally rejuvenated.

as an environmental site it's excellent. it's the largest Freshwater marsh in port phillip bay and western port area. but as an attraction very average due a couple of factors. it lacks info signs that explain significance of wetland and the birdhide at Tern Ave is blocked by trees.
TIP: offical guides tell you to park on tern ave.. but no parking room at all there. instead park at Truemans Rd Rec Reserve and enter at netball courts. that is side of main viewing platform. Rec Reserve also has adequate playground

Point Nepean National Park has some incredible history. It is claimed for instance that the Gun implacement at the entrance to Port Phillip bay and contained within the Park fired the first allied shots of WW1 and WW2.
The Landscape is stark, windswept but beautiful. The remnants of the old Fort are fascinating as is the Quarantine Station. Well worth a visit.

The sand is coarse but there is plenty of it and the water is clean. Beware of the surf especially at high tide - we have seen towels engulfed by rogue waves. The good news with this beach is that at low tide there is a rock shelf and pool that while deep provides a protected swimming area. There is parking but you don't want to miss out.

Went for lunch to this beautiful place. The manager (?) Is a bit uninterested and not really a people person. He just seems brusk. The other staff are wonderful. The food is gorgeous and served in small portions. Prices are at the upper end of acceptable and at times you might say too expensive for your seving size ie 2 calamari tacos (quite small) for $16. . The charcuterie board is very nice . We did enjoy it and had a lovely lunch. The young man serving us was delightful. We could have taken our lunch out to a picnic rug but it was very hot and no shade. Overall a great lunch but serving sizes could be bigger for prices. Also the man at front could be more customer focused
