While visiting family in Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire we went to see the puppet show.
What a beautiful afternoon. From arriving at venue we were greeted with a friendly and welcoming approach. The venue itself was magical and the children - (and adults) - all loved it.
The show kept all the ages entertained and was just the right amount of time to capture the magic for the children. The cafe was lovely and if weather had been better the Gardens would make a lovely setting for a snack and refreshments.
Highly recommended for a traditional family afternoon treat!!!

Tinto Hill

Reviewed By John C - Tillicoultry, United Kingdom

Excellent outing if you are looking for a short hill day, okay this is compared to the 3,000foot+ Munros to the north. Sizeable car park at the base of the hill (at Fallburn) makes for easy parking which is always good. Walking boots are strongly recommended. Fairly gentle gradients encountered on the ascent following a wide well trodden path up and over Totherin Hill which is basically a continuous ridge that extends to the summit of Tinto. Massive cairn of stones at the top provides splendid panoramic views in all directions. Although the summit is 707m above sea level, the relatively high stating point gives a total ascent for the walker of 460m over a distance of 5k. It is also well worth taking a few minutes out to explore the archaeology. Just to the east of the path, the grid reference is NS 961367 there are two parallel ditches and ancient earthworks forming a ring almost 100m across. The structure is easily missed but quite obvious when viewed from above i.e. on your descent. Brilliant wee hill.

Stobo Castle Health Spa

Nestled among the beautiful Scottish Borders countryside, Stobo Castle offers excellent service, fine food, elegantly trained staff and above all, the ability to find peace in a frenetic world.

I have just returned from my 4th visit to Stobo Castle and it still manages to captivate me. Stobo Castle is just the best experience, from the beautiful scenery around it to the fabulous decor and many interesting pieces displayed all over the whole building.
We stayed in the Castle Lodges which is a 2 minute walk from the main building. It doesn’t look much from the outside but the rooms are lovely. Comfortable beds, well appointed room and perfect for a relaxing stay.
The spa is just wonderful. The whole setting makes you feel instantly relaxed, there is a lovely scent in the air and it just feels so easy and chilled. The spa facilities are fabulous, I particularly like the aromatic steam room. And the pool is great, you can swim to the edge and just gaze out the massive glass side and admire the scenery (and watch the rabbits running around outside)!
The food is delicious and plentiful although mealtimes are quite restricted. But this just enable and encourages you to use the spa facilities more - not a hardship!
I had the Neom De-stress treatment and can thoroughly recommend it. It may be a bit pricey but it was amazing.
So all in all. Another wonderful stay and I can’t wait to go back again.

Broughton Ales

Reviewed By Armenianb - Edinburgh, United Kingdom

I was on a lovely drive through the Scottish Borders and came across a brewery called Broughton Ales which is located in the village of Broughton. We went inside the vintage barn brewery and there's a wee visitor shop to buy bottled beers, see the original bottled ales from the 80s, 90s and see the history of the brewery. The staff was very nice and welcoming to us. They had several offers on beer which is always a great thing! I think we got 12 beers for £16.00!
While we were viewing the beer stuff in the shop, we were fortunate that someone was willing to give us a quick tour of the brewery and show us the brewing process. It was really interesting and amazing to see a traditional brewery and listen to their brewery methods. Absolutely great and I would definitely call back to book an official tour!

Biggar and Upper Clydesdale Museum

The Biggar and Upper Clydesdale Museum explores 14,000 years of rural and small town life in Upper Clydesdale.

A lovely little town and worth a visit along with the other museums and landmarks etc.
Located on the High St there is ample free parking outside. The museum is quite small but the exhibits are all very interesting especially as a lot of them are about the local area. The replicas of the original shops are excellent and an insight into the past. Well worth the admission charge which hopefully will help keep the museum going.

The Crown Inn

We booked today at short notice, as we fancied a nice Sunday lunch with my in-laws. I was asked on the phone, 'Would you like the carvery lunch?' to which I replied a resounding, 'Yes Please'. Brownie points with the husband for that one.
You arrive into a nice 'coaching inn' ambience, nice bar, and we were shown to our reserved table. A nice lass took a drinks order, and a nice chap explained the carvery - starter & main course, help yourself to three different starters - home made lentil soup, pate, salad, garlic mushrooms, fresh bread rolls, oatcakes, salad. Then it's the carvery itself - where a lovely gentleman carves 4 roast meats with trimmings. Turkey, Roast Beef, Pork with cracking & Roast Ham. Stuffing, bacon rolls, Yorkshire puddings, lots of vegetables, roast potatoes, 4 sauces and GRAVY. As Much As You Want! And you can return as many times as you want. All for £10.99. The meat melts in your mouth. The food was excellent (as I think you can tell from my description). My husband wants to go back weekly. Bring your appetite! We finished off with a nice latte, which came with a wee piece of Madeira cake. No dinner after a lunch like this!

Beautiful Gardens all year round. Closed in winter, but from early spring snowdrops right through to late autumn colours it is captivating with lots of paths to explore and incredible views over the Gardens and surrounding countryside. Back at the modern glass-fronted cafe with a view of the Gardens, a nice menu with additional specials each day, is a welcome treat which you can follow with a browse through the books, cards, jewellery, and other gifts in the shop. Well worth giving Dawyck a good few hours of your day.

This was very interesting but not a place to spend a whole day - just maybe an hour or two at the most, the lady there was very pleasant and helpful and we enjoyed looking around as we are ex Gas employees my husband found it really interesting and it brought back a lot of memories seeing all the machinery and also the smells which he recognised. Biggar is a nice little place as well with some good places to eat.

Our Pilot, Celia Morley, and her colleague Jonathon - (sorry don't know his last name or even how to spell his first name) - were competent and friendly throughout this highly enjoyable flight. Even a cynical old man like me at no point felt that they did not know what they were doing.
We left from Biggar Rugby Club rather than Shieldhill Castle Hotel but the change in launch venue made no significant difference to us and we were warned of the change at the time of confirming flight "go-ahead" the night before .. admittedly only 7 hours before but that was plenty of time for us and I doubt that the weather could ever really be more predictable.
We joined a group of very friendly people of disparate experience and home location .. which helped improve the experience for us .. and hopefully for them too.
The flight direction was about as far away from our preferred direction ... i.e. *towards* our house .. as it could possibly be but it was still as hugely enjoyable, comfortable and safe experience as we could have hoped for.
If Virgin ever gets around to arranging a "short notice" ... likely to be flying in your direction tomorrow and have some spaces .. type of database .. we'd sign up!
Sadly this website won't even let me upload a copy of my certificate of taking this flight .. :-{
