What a gem! This church and monastery is a must see if you are in the Lisbon area. Amazing architecture, stained glass and history. Built by King John I this classic gothic church provides informative history of Portugal. The Founders Chapel, Royal Cloisters (1400 AD) and Chapter Room, Tomb of Unknown Soldier and unfinished Chapel are part of the tour.

This is yet another castle in the seemingly endless parade of Castles. I would not drive specifically to this one u less you are in the area, Weaver the views from the top are quite spectacular. There a lots of steps and the towers actually have roofs on them. Make sure you drive right up to the entrance as there are lots of steps to climb when you get inside. Good for a short visit. Entry fee.

Easy to arrive by foot, even if a bit of a steep walk. Totally restored in the XXth century after the Napoleonic troops left it in ruins, the complex story around Ernesto Korrodi and the rehabilitation process is already worth a visit. Those interested in military history, 'Românico' and 'Gótico' styles and restoration will find valuable elements. Those captivated by the legends, histories and abandonment, will find it very romantic. For those only interested in the views and taking pictures, the iconic 'loggia' created by the gothic arcades doubles as the best viewpoint of the city.

This basilica sits at the top of the wide, wide esplanade of Fatima. For me, the esplanade was the main feature of visiting Fatima. The basilica holds religious importance of course for Catholics and must be visited. Architecturally, the basilica is not so different from others.
But the expansive esplanade - more than twice as large as St. Peter's Square in the Vatican, is humbling in the extreme, especially when observing streams of
religious pilgrims walking through it to the Cathedral or the chapel off to the side.

This compound is not what I was expecting. I guess I didn’t do my research. The old church sits elevated above a very large open area for crowds to gather for services, with the new church opposite. There is a small glass building on one side of the open area, beside an olive tree that is supposed to be the site of the next appearance of the Virgin Mary. The old church is quite plain inside, although you can visit the tombs of the children who claim to have seen the first appearance a century ago. The new church is very large, with a retractable roof, but not really a beautiful building. The streets surrounding the sanctuary are what you would expect, full of hotels and souvenir shops. I am glad we saw it, but were not impressed.

This museum/permanent exhibition explains the victory of the Portuguese army and its English allies over the Castilian army and its French allies on August 14, 1385.
The Portuguese/English army counted only about 6500 soldiers whilst their opponents were more than 31000.
The Centro de Interpretacao da Batalha de Aljubarrota explains why and how this battle took place.
To celebrate his victory, the Portuguese king ordered the building of the nearby Batalha monastery.

I absolutely love this place! Wonderful large, golden sandy beach, great esplanade to walk or sit and observe time passing by. Lovely for all ages. There are great cafes and places to eat. Nearby there's the pine forest, great for walks and cycle rides, and the lovely Freshwater lagoon, Ervideira, where the whole family can paddle or swim. A must!

this is a very old and very beautiful church, yet at the same time it is very simplistic with white walls.
