The 10 Best Things to Do in Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis

February 27, 2018 Renato Branum

Nestled between the Caribbean and lush mountains, Basseterre has a long history of colonial struggle that is reflected in its architecture and cultural monuments. The National Museum, St. George's Anglican Church, the Circus area and Independence Square all give glimpses to the city's past. But most travelers do not come to Basseterre for history; they come for the beaches, resorts and marinas, offering ample snorkeling, windsurfing, diving, sunbathing and golfing opportunities.

Nick is an excellent kiting instructor. Great communication on how to use the kite safely and for fun. He was flexible on scheduling. He is also good on giving feedback to make adjustments for kite handling and Surfing. I do have prior experience with a trainer kite, and because of some prior experience and great instruction I was able to become proficient in kiteboarding in one session where I could control the kite, ride the kite and board, recover the board, with upwind and downwind mobility. While I could use more advanced lessons I feel safe going out on my own. Excellent experience highly recommend that you go learn this awesome sport with Nick.

Royal St. Kitts Golf Club

Famed Canadian Acrhitch Thomas McBroom has skillfully remodeled Royal St. Kitts Golf Club to provide breathtaking views of the natural terrain. The course boasts spectacular and picturesque holes which border the black sandy Beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and stretch to the calm waters of the Caribbean Sea. The "links" -style golf course has five par 3s with three full holes on the Atlantic, and two full holes on the Caribbean Sea. The golf course is spread over 125 acres of irrigated lush seashore paspalum, and advanced hybrid turf grass, specifically designed to tolerate the salty ocean spray. Four sets of tee complexes allow golfers of all skill levels to enjoy the challenge posed by this magnificant layout. The finishing hole returns golfers to the "country club" -style clubhouse featuring a full-service golf shop, locker rooms, and clubhouse grille. Enjoy this challenging 18-hole, par 71 layout year-round. Take in the sights of aquamarine surf, black sand Beaches, and the local wildlife including egrets, lizards, and green tail monkeys that occupy the surrounding landscape. The Royal St. Kitts Golf Club is sure to test your skills, while stimulating all your senses during a golf experience you will never forget.

The fairways are not well maintained but the greens are but on the slow side. For the price would have expected a little bit better. Great ocean views along holes 15 through 18. Very friendly and accommodating staff.

Joseph was our guide and he was fantastic. Very interesting trip, we went on the excursion that was not the usual route taken by other tours. As a matter of fact we did not see another tour company for the whole trip which lasted about 4 hours. Joseph stopped many times to point things out along the way. Every one loved the excursion. THANKS!

Fairview Great House & Botanical Garden

Fairview Great House and Botanical Garden is an attraction like no other here in beautiful St. Kitts. Nestled at the foot of Olivees Mountain, is the island's newest and most unique attraction!!!

A late 17th century plantation house with much French influence, preserved as a museum with period furniture, utensils, etc and helpful staff who describe the history of the house [including British Royal visitors]. Views over the sea [a short distance down hill] are beautiful and very Caribbean blue [at least on the day of our visit!]. The property is just above the tsunami escape line and to its rear are impressive botanical Gardens with the lush Caribbean plants and trees. But it can be very hot so wear the sun cream and the hats!

Cockleshell Beach

Reviewed By Peter C - Goose Creek, South Carolina, United States

Took trip to this beach while on cruise - our worst choice. The beach was very dirty, i.e., glass bottles strewn about, littered with seaweed, dirt mixed with sand, etc.; water cloudy; too crowded; beach chairs dirty; facilities dirty too. Having been to Caribbean before, we expected better.
