The 10 Best Things to do in Basseterre, St. Kitts

October 13, 2021 Nobuko Falco

Nestled between the Caribbean and lush mountains, Basseterre has a long history of colonial struggle that is reflected in its architecture and cultural monuments. The National Museum, St. George's Anglican Church, the Circus area and Independence Square all give glimpses to the city's past. But most travelers do not come to Basseterre for history; they come for the beaches, resorts and marinas, offering ample snorkeling, windsurfing, diving, sunbathing and golfing opportunities.

Romney Manor

This old plantation estate houses the Caribelle Batik works. You can watch colorful, tie-dye clothes being made.

I am so happy that we went to visit RomneyManor and the Carrabelle batik factory and store. It was truly a beautiful walk through the rain forest up to the grounds that are perfectly manicured and such magnificent flowers and trees to admire. There are endless photo opportunities here to enjoy. There is a fountain and an overlook to the rainforest and a bell tower to climb and a 400-year-old Saman with flowers everywhere. In addition to the gorgeous landscaping there are recently handcrafted batik pieces free flowing in the wind to dry and admire. I was so taken aback and fell instantly in love with one piece in particular that I went in to buy it right off of the clothesline. I asked to meet the artist and take her photo holding my new treasure. We also met the owner/groundskeeper who took us on a mini private tour of some of the specific plants, trees and flowers that were growing nearby with a very informative exclamation for each. I highly recommend visiting this gem while on Saint Kitts

Greg was born and brought up on St. Kitts and Nevis and following his return home from College in Nova Scotia Canada in 1980, started working at his Parents hotel, the Ocean Terrace Inn, with one of his jobs being to do tours for the hotels guests. While growing up on St. Kitts, Greg's parents became leaders in the local Tourism Industry, starting one of the first hotels in the islands, with Greg's Dad, eventually receiving the "Order of the British Empire" (OBE), from the St. Kitts Government for his outstanding achievements in local Industry. This has given Greg a unique grounding as well as a deep sense of understanding for his home country and coupled with his tourism training abroad, has allowed him to become one of leading and longest serving tour guides in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. Greg and his team of certified Tour Guides have won many awards from the Tourism Authority for their businesses high standards of service. From the very beginning Greg has used modified, 4X4 Land Rovers to do his "unique" island Safaris with. Being specially made, the 8 Land Rovers he uses today, are all open sided with mostly forward facing, stadium orientated seating, that provide his guests with the best way to experience exploring beyond the shores of St. Kitts and Nevis. Greg's Safaris is the only tour company in the Federation that uses 4X4 Land Rovers for touring on both islands! For your private, half days hiking pleasure, Greg has created two "unique looped hiking trails", one at the Phillips Mountain Valley (2 miles long), and at the other at the Wingfield River Valley (2 1/2 miles long), on St. Kitts. His company is also the only one on St. Kitts to offer driving tours from coast to coast through the lushly forested interior and while traveling through the mountains his guests would have access to a private 5 acre "mountain top property", perched1000 feet sea level, a place of cool temperatures and breathtaking views, that can only be experienced on a "one of kind" 4X4 Safari Tour with him and his guides. Greg is one of the founding members of the St. Christopher National Trust and as well, sits on the Central Forest Reserve National Park Committee. He is also a Life Member of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Brimstone Hill National Park and is also part owner of Sky Safaris, a company he started in 2009.

Walk beyond the burgeoning cruise terminal and find the authentic history. An imposing, stone building houses the story. Read the posters on the wall outside, documenting the island’s heritage. Talk to the lovely staff in the gift shop housing quiet souvenirs. Look out for the safe behind the cash desk - John Tann, Newgate Street, London EC4! History has a way of jumping out at you.

Cockleshell Beach

Reviewed By luv2travelmucho - Wallingford, United States

We spent two days at cockleshell beach and enjoyed both very much. The first time we went it was because a snorkeling trip got rescheduled and we needed something to do so we went on an adventure and found this beautiful beach and rented an umbrella and two lounge chairs for $10. The waves are just right and the sand is so clean and there is an abundance of beautiful shells to either look at or collect. The view across to Nevis is stunning! It is also right next-door to reggae beach where you may take a convenient water taxi $40 per person one way to nevus and enjoy that small wonder of an island as well. We were there on a day that was not too busy so I can only speak to the excellent time we had that was very peaceful and enjoyable

Independence Square

Once the site of slave auctions and council meetings, the square exemplifies Colonial-style architecture.

A local that reminds us of a sad part of human kind history:slavery. Still, a place to visit to get inside St Kitts past. Here, it was once, the slave market and all the surrounding houses had basements to keep the sick slaves apart from the healthy ones, until they were well enough to be sold.

Port Zante

Reviewed By StAlbansWilbo - High Wycombe, United Kingdom

Some cruise terminals are boring and packed with cheap gift shops giving no feel of the ambience. Port Zante is different, although there are still the mandatory shops selling jewellery which are to be avoided there is also a great variety of other shops to choose from. Equally what is so good as one can literally walk a few hundred yards from the cruise ship to be in the shopping area. Some of the shops are also high end but with sensible prices.....selling leather goods, kitchenware, clothes etc. There are also some good bars with local atmosphere......the best is right in the middle of the pedestrian area and we had a great time there, as well. We were not interested in having a meal which was a s well because most places were congregated around a food mall and this did not look great. That apart Port Zante is a great place to spend a few hours without the need to walk the extra half mile or so into Basseterre itself and is far better than many such cruise terminal adjacent shpping areas
