Roebling Aqueduct Suspension Bridge

The bridge does not do justice for what this project meant. At the time there were large rafts (made up of trees that were cut down) measuring 50x150 that came down the river heading for Philadelphia. The coal carrying barges were coming down the canal and attempting to cross the Delaware. In many cases there were collisions and the barges were the losers. This aqueduct allowed the barges to cross over the west branch of the Delaware and continue on to Kingston for the trip down the Hudson.

Departure was a big mess. There is no food or coffee at the start point. It was Sunday on 4th of July weekend and there were tones of people. We got on the river 2.5h after our reservation time! The river is slow to very slow most of the time, so you will have to paddle most of the time. There is no white water or danger of flipping the raft, but you will get wet from splashes. There were so many rafts on the river. We saw 3 eagles which was very cool. We did have fun, because we had good company, but I would not recommend doing this on a holiday weekend because of the crowds. If you do: Get there early, so you can get to the river in more timely manner. Get all food and drinks you need for the whole day. Bring friends and have water-gun fight with them. Lots of other people were diking beer. Not sure if it is allowed or not. Lastly, some people had speakers and were playing music. I wish we had thought of it.

Shohola Lake

A small lake great for fishing large mouth bass.

Reviewed By schmutaki - new jersey

Shohola Falls are not that well known and not particularly high, but wonderful nonetheless. To get there, take Route 6 West from Milford. After driving about 15 minutes, you will approach Shohola Lake and a bridge crossing Shohola Creek. Before you cross the bridge make a left into a road with the sign for Shohola Inn and Cabins and drive 300 yards to a fork. Make a right at the fork and into a small parking area. From there you can see the lake and dam to the left and a short path down to the falls to the right. The falls are not high, but are broad and vigorous and you can walk over several areas where the flow is lower. The best viewing angle is to carefully follow a short descending path to the right which brings you around for a full head on view of these wonderful falls. Take care as there are no handrails and the path is narrow, but manageable. There is also a viewing area on the other side of the falls, which we did not visit, which can be accessed by driving back out to Route 6 and crossing the bridge until you reach another parking area. If you are visiting some of the falls in the Delaware Water Gap, if you have the time, Shohola Falls are worth a visit.

Grey Towers National Historic Site

Reviewed By Nellie727 - Pennsylvania

Grey Towers is the family home of the Pinchot family. Gifford Pinchot was the first American born forester, and worked in Teddy Roosevelt's administration, before coming home to Pennsylvania and serving as governor twice.

Only the first floor of the house us open for most tours, although the entire house is occasionally viewable. It's an interesting place, with a vast entry hall, an interesting library and sitting room, and, out back, the best picnic table ever.

A separate building houses a place to view some short videos on the family and the house. I have to say I got a little chill watching JFK riding in that open convertible, barely two months before his death, when he came to dedicate the house as a national historic site.

There's a tiny little shop, with some interesting books and a few souvenirs.

I was surprised how many people were visiting on a weekday in October.

We enjoyed touring the grounds and house that Zane Grey wrote some of his books in. The attendee at the museum offers nice stories about his life that we had not read in any travel magazine. You can purchase a few of his books at the museum. The grounds are well kept and it is a nice view of the Delaware River as well.

When we stopped at the Dingmans Falls Visitor Center we were told by the Ranger this is a must see Falls in the area because it is the tallest Falls in PA. But once we got there, we learned from a Ranger on site that only the path to the very top of the Falls was open. The other two trails to view the middle and bottom of the Falls were closed for renovations. The only path currently open is very short & easy but all you see if the top of the falls; not worth the drive so skip it until the main viewing areas are reopened.

Every year we go rafting on Delaware river with friends. This time we took trip from Barryville base to Eddy's Pond renting rafts from Kittatinny. We called night before to make reservations and arrived to the base around 9:20 am. Check-in was fast and efficient and very soon we got our papers ready to take rafts on the water. We had 4 adults and 2 children (9 and 10 yo) and we took 2 rafts for our group. At about 10 am we were already on the water. Our trip took about 6 hours with 3 stops for picnic and swimming. It was easy to spot the Eddy's Pond place by 2 big red balloons over the river. Stop is on the left side of the river. When we arrived bus was waiting and at no time it took us back to the base. We were planning also to do zip line but we very tired (zip line is better to plan before the river trip). It was very enjoyable activity for everybody. Going again soon!
