We visited the Southern portion of Mt. St. Helens Nat'l Volcanic Monument as a day trip from Vancouver, WA. What a great experience! Several of the spots we visited required a $5 parking fee--we used our America the Beautiful pass. Great unique experiences! Trail of two forests: interpretive signs along a short boardwalk in a beautiful green and mossy forest discuss the forest before and after the eruption. The highlight are tree molds--some visible from the boardwalk and one you can crawl through! It's down a short ladder, completely dark (bring a headlamp or light), and narrow. Young kids were happily going through it--it's not that stressful! Ape Cave: Lava tube that can be hiked. There is an in and back easier trip (heavily trafficked) and a more difficult, longer tube that has an exit further down. We only went through the easier tube and really enjoyed it. Very unique experience. It's completely dark so bring headlamps and/or strong flashlights. To get to the very end of the tube requires some crawling as the tube narrows. Remember to lookup and around when inside the lava tube as it's easy to get stuck looking down to avoid rocks. Lava Canyon Trail: the volcano's eruption uncovered this beautiful landscape--blue water rushing over rocks, waterfall along a small canyon. There is hiking over rocks, stair cases, and areas where you could easily fall off the cliff; so, be careful. There are plenty of signs warning of the danger! The trail is a loop with a suspension bridge over the high point of the canyon, but unfortunately when we were there in July 2019, the bridge was in need of repair and closed. The hike is still definitely worth it, but you will have to turn around at the bridge instead of completing the loop. There is also a great viewpoint of Mt. St. Helens (on a clear day you can see it). There weren't any signs for the viewpoint, but a pullout allowed for a couple cars to park. From the south side, can't see the portion that blew out during the eruption, but still imposing view. Was worth a stop and we followed a little trail down to the dry creek bed with sand that looked like it was made from lava. Great day trip from Vancouver, WA.

Enjoyable 6 mile round trip day hiking area accessible from Lower Falls Campground. Here you can see four different waterfalls on a nice trail with minimal elevation gain.From the south this area is 15 miles off main road just 1/4 mile from information center and a 2 hour drive from Portland. The trail isn't marked well with direction of other falls from Lower, so you want to take trail to left after Lower Falls viewpoints. If you want to shave 2.5 miles off your hike, but still see all the falls, park at Lower Falls campground and do a 3 minute walk to viewpoint then drive to Middle Falls parking area and start your hike from there. I started my hika at 7:30 on a Saturday morning and didn't see anyone till I turned around and headed back. One word of caution if coming from the south, there is one rough patch of road where a low clearance vehicle could have problems
