The 10 Best Things to do in Amalfi, Campania

October 24, 2021 Jacquiline Darosa

If it's your first time visiting the Amalfi Coast, chances are you'll do a double-take the first time you see a roadside lemon stand. Yes, those are lemons, and yes, they are the size of your head. But despite their freakish appearance, you will grow to love these lemons because the locals use them to produce limoncello. And take it from us, there's nothing like a glass of limoncello as you gaze out at the sea from the balcony of your hotel in Amalfi. It's pretty much perfection.

Amalfi Musical

Every Wednesday and Saturday at 9pm, AMALFI MUSICAL tells a story set in ninth century about the rise of first Republic of Amalfi. Through the story of Antonio and Giovanna's love, thwarted by perfidious city's persecutor Sicardo, the show tells the story of Amalfi's liberation from bloodthirsty Lombard supremacy. The performance is in Italian language with surtitles in English and other languages. Reservation required.

I was wandering around the Amalfi Duomo on a Saturday and this info booth just caught my eyes with musical flyers (I'm kind of a musical fan). The lady in charge of the booth told me the show was fully booked for the night but I could come at 9pm as stand-by and probably some no-shows would turn up, and I did get a spot! I didn't even realize it was a free show until they gave me my ticket! A free musical performance provided on the Amalfi coast is indeed "epic" and thoughtful for people to get to know a bit of the history of the place in a theatric way. The music and the singing are quite good (I actually cried over some of the songs), and the tension of the acting is quite intense as well. The atmosphere is quite unique thanks to the venue that's over a millennium-old. It reminds me a bit of the new French version of Romeo & Juliet for those who have seen it, which I am a big fan of. For me personally it's absolutely an overachieving event to stumble on :)

Great little garden connected with the Duomo. Great for looking at old frescoes and original mosaics. And bell tower, of course. Amazing.

Museo della Carta

I know, I know. A paper museum? But this spot is truly fascinating! The paper mill has been operating since the 13th century and the tour gives you a great overview of the techniques used to make paper from that time onward- from the manual cotton presses to the water-powered pulp mills to the electric mills of more modern times. What's more, you can actually see demonstrations of these massive devices as they would have been used centuries ago! Our tour guide switched seamlessly between English and Italian and we had no problems following the demonstrations. We even got a free paper sample at the end, and the gift shop has some lovely items, including pressed flowers, notebooks and personalized wax seals. The surrounding neighbourhood is quite picturesque, as well, and it's worth a jog up the road from the marina.

Duomo di Sant'Andrea

Reviewed By Gfazaker63 - Melbourne, Australia

In the Piazza de Duomo in Amalfi you see the steps leading up to the Amalfi Cathedral (Cattedrale Di Sant Andrea) dedicated to the apostle St. Andrew . If you feel fit enough to walk up the steps ( and there are many) it is well worth a visit. The structure dates back to the 9th century and has been changed/ enhanced over many centuries. Reportedly the remains of StAndrew were brought to the Cathedral in the 13th Century. It is a beautiful space and the crypt houses many artifacts. A word of advice is that many school groups visit the cathedral on a daily basis so it might be worth timing your visit for early morning or late afternoon when it is quieter.

Valle delle Ferriere

Reviewed By mantisa2015

Forget about the crowded and overpriced beaches, leave the droves of tourists behind and take the time to hike up the Valle delle Ferriere. Especially in the summer it is also a very nice way to escape the heat, since most of the hike is under the trees. However getting to the later shady part ist quite difficult in the afternoon cause the beginning of the path is many many steps under the sun. Overall 45 to 60 min one way it is an easy hike / walk for some others, we met old ladies in flip flops who took a shower under the waterfalls but I recommend closed shoes and also long trousers cause the path is overgrown in some places. Starting from Amalfi and after you walk up the main road to the museum of the papermills follow the signs to the right, climb up many steps and after you pass in front of a tavern you start to get into the forest and follow the stream upstream. There are many small waterfalls formed and one or two big ones, you can find one or two small lagoons to bathe, if you can handle the icy water. The best thing in my opinion was the many ruined buildings on the way there, old paper and iron mills that used to be the backbone of the local industry. Poor donkeys that had to carry stuff up this path! The ruins are almost surreal, huge empty skeletons of stone buildings, some staircases and arches still standing, also ovens and other industrial components. Very eery in some places. I loved it, wouldn't like to be there alone in the evening though... From the far end you can climb higher and meet the main path that used to be the main connection to the other villages, still walkable. We didn't go so far as to reach the enclosed section that you have to pay to get access, there is the longest waterfall I presume from what was described to me, I think it is closer when coming down from Pontone. I recommend taking this hike and escaping the saturated coast for a couple of hours.

Positano is quaint ... but relatively small and typically jam-packed with beach-focused tourists. Amalfi is beautiful and big enough to absorb the tour buses that make the drive south from Positano. It feels more like an authentic Italian town and, in fact, was a central hub for trade and culture in ancient times. The mosaic-covered medieval cathedral is beautiful outside, especially in late afternoon when the sun is low. Inside there are new findings, restorations and a very informative museum that have been added in recent years. Elsewhere in Amalfi are all sorts of restaurants, shops, and narrow streets to explore.

Ruga Nova Mercatorum (Via dei Mercanti)

Reviewed By Odyssey661030

Mivel Amalfi főutcája a Via Lorenzo Amalfi, ami Via Pietro Capuano-ként folytatódik. A káprázatos Duomo kedves emlékeket idézett vissza Toszkánából. A teret kávézók, bárok veszik körül, de ha spórolnod kell, akkor a Dóm mellett található lépcsőkön lehet találni árnyas helyeket és ott pihenni, figyelni, ahogy jönnek mennek az emberek. Amalfi a béke világa. It's very hard for me to find words when I'm thinking about Amalfi. To be there... it's a memory for a lifetime. As I have seen everybody talks here about the main street of Amalfi, but to be honest I don't know where the Via dei Mercanti could be. Because Amalfi's main street is called Via Lorenzo di Amalfi and it continues as Via Pietro Capuano. Actually it doesn't even matter. The point is that Amalfi is wonderful. You can't get lost there: if you arrive with bus or with ferry, from the port you will immediately see the Porta della Marina, which is the gate of the town. When you enter, you will find yourself on the main square: Piazza Duomo which is like a fairytale. The magnificent Duomo recalled my sweet memories from Tuscany. The square is surrounded by cafes and bars, but if you are one a budget tour, there are the steps near the Dome, where you can find a nice, shady place to relax and watch people come and go. Amalfi is the world of peace, the experience is simply that you are there. You will likely continue the stroll in the town along Via Lorenzo di Amalfi. Unlike in the other Amalfi coast towns, here you have the chance to buy souvenirs for affordable price. And not only low quality tourist cliches. Not everywhere of course, but it's easy to find the shop that fits your needs along the main street and it worth to explore the side streets around the Porta della Marina. Besides that, walking along the main street you will see little alleys on both sides with steep steps. It worth to climb a little and you will feel, see and here the dolce vita in Amalfi.
