Twisty ride, but some of the best views in the Cote d'Azur. Stunning views of Monaco all the way to Italy.

The Alpes Trophy, the only remaining example of such triumphal architecture, was erected in the 1st century BC to honour Augustus Caesar’s victories against the tribes of the Alpes. The monument features an exhibition of engravings, plaster cars, models, a video display and panoramic view. I love to visit monuments and ruins when on vacation- so I convinced the family to stop in to see the Trophiee d'Auguste. First of all, Turbie is a wonderful village perched atop a mountain overlooking Monaco and the Mediterranean, secondly, the monument is very interesting (you can climb to the top) and third, there is an excellent museum that traces the history of the monument as well as the history of the reconstruction that was done. All in all, this was an excellent side trip during a great day on the Cote d'Azur.

Love love loved it here, we were in the area and thought we’d stop in, so pleased we did, the most stunning village with a great vibe, beautiful cobbled streets and a lovely feel. A great pottery shop and wood craft shop too, don’t miss it!

Musee Departemental des Merveilles

Reviewed By MeredithAussie - Cannes, France

This museum opens up the history and geography of the region, explaining the significance of the nearby rock carvings and settlement over the last 5000 years. Extensive captions are provided in French, with only a few in English/Italian (for the dioramas). I’m still trying to decide if you should visit the museum BEFORE you hike into the Vallée des Merveilles or AFTER. On the one hand, having background knowledge of the region would be useful when you’re exploring the rock carvings. On the other, having visited the rock carvings, it’s good to consolidate your understanding. Regardless, I recommend the museum.

Wolves have been reintroduced into the upper valley, but prevented from going down the valley to farms etc, by a large fence. The fence has viewing platforms and windows enabling visitors to see them from close by. There is also a great show of tame birds of prey.
