The 10 Best Things to Do in Allinge, Denmark

July 19, 2017 Leonardo Torrence

Located on the Danish island of Bornholm, Allinge-Sandvig is the product of a merger between two small fishing villages. It’s close enough to the impressive medieval ruins of the 13th-century Hammershus fortress that you could make a day hike of it, strolling past beautiful scenery. For more adventurous travelers, kayaking in the Baltic Sea is a popular way to experience the Danish coast, and rock climbers can scale coastal cliffs and abandoned quarries.

Hammerknuden, Slotslyngen

Reviewed By angeleyes27 - Marlton, New Jersey

This is ruins of a 13th century castle built along the bluffs of the Baltic Sea. Now in ruins but once the site of fierce battles, it is Northern Europe's largest medieval castle. There reminds me of Blarney Castle in Ireland. You get a magnificent view of the coast from the north end of the fortress. It has free admission and is about a half mile walk from the parking lot to the ruins. There is a restaurant here as well. There are only pay toilets and they have a note that they will lock you inside if you don't pay. There are some plaques giving some insight into the fortress history, but there are no tours.

This lake has the most beautiful turquoise blue colour of a lake that I have ever seen. It is surrounded by rocks, I think it was an old quarry. There is another big lake right next to it. The area around it is nice for walking. My husband and I took our little dog there, he loved it too.

This area is excellent for photos as well as slow strolls along the cobblestone streets and browsing in the numerous stores. I was here during the Allinge Jazz festival so there was live music while I was here as well. It was very charming with colorful orange roofs of traditional Danish buildings.

290 Meter zipline.

Reviewed By Ian H

Ok, not quite. The zip line has somebody helping at the top and at the bottom. That's it.
This is the Opel Lake and as well as the zip line you can jump off one of the ledges 8m down into the lake (and old quarry). Again, it's up to you to look after yourself. You have a short swim to an old rope to pull yourself up by or a longer swim to walk out where the zip wire ends.
Great fun for kids and adults with a sense of adventure and typically Danish in the sense that they won't let H&S rules spoil the fun!

It's a great place. You can really feel the history there. The entrance is for a fee (20DK) but it's worth to go inside. There is a beautiful painted ceiling and you can go upstairs through a really narrow and steep staircase but it's really worth it! The second and third floor give you a great view on the roof structure. I really loved this place.

You come here to see this, that and the other, all of it technological. Don't get me wrong: this is a great place, with everything technical from at SAAB Draken fighther (a real one) to old telephones and beer bottles. If you think history (and specifically the history of technology) is a place where you go and browse, like in a department store with lots of concessions, this is the place for you, and your family.
In this review, I am being asked if this museum has "bathroom facilities". Of course not, at least not for visitors, but there are excellent toilets, for both sexes and for those who need special access.

Salomens Kapel

Reviewed By ReviewInProgress - Germany

The Salomens Kapel are the ruins of a small chapel.
It is basically two small rooms, but it is very nice setting close to the sea (about 20-30 meters). Also there is a tree and a small forest plus a beautiful scenery along the coastal trail. This total composition was already worth it for me to go there. There were nearly no people and everything was so peaceful. If I had my painting stuff with me, I would have set down and started drawing and exploring the place.
Route wise we first went to Hammeren fyr (beautiful lighthouse up on the hill) by car and then walked downhill from there. At the sea we followed the trail towards Hammerodde fyr (lighthouse and the north west tip of the island). Halfway, you will find Salomens Kapel. Overall this is a very nice and beautiful walk I can highly recommend. But if you are just about to visit the chapel, then drive to the very end of the parking lot of Sandvik beach and walk from there directly (there will be a sign for a trail going straight west).

Really nice little Church. It is a beautiful yellow colour which looks particularly nice in sunlight. If you look up towards the ceiling you will see a boat. I think that all Danish churches have a boat inside them but I am not sure maybe it is only the ones near the sea. Outside of the church is an amazing and imaginative statue of an Angle that is an old lady with an old lady style handbag.

Lilli's Glasdesign

Reviewed By CCmilan - Milan, Italy

We crossed the island to go here and do the glass workshop.
The assistant was really nice and friendly and patient with us while we decided what piece we were going to do, from a choice of necklaces, figures on a stick and medium to medium large glass paintings.
We decided to splash out and do the medium pieces rather than the necklace and this was expensive especially as we were leaving the next day so coming back to collect the finished piece was impossible and we had to have it posted to us.
We were given a small tray with a clear glass base and a huge array of colored bits and pieces to make a fused glass mosaic. We spent over and hour immersed in the colors of the glass and left our pieces to be cooked.
It would have been nice to have had a bit more supervision and control at the end. When my piece went into the kiln I didn't check it s last time and unfortunately the two hooks to hang it up with moved and were fused into the glass unevenly in such a way that I can't hang it up.
Overall an enthralling experience.
The shop was nice too but having broken the bank already with our own pieces I didn't buy anything though I would have liked to.
The postage was very quick. The box was perfect and the pieces were extremely well packed.
It was very exiting indeed to receive them at home. We created our own momento of a very special holiday.
