The 10 Best Things to do Good for Kids in Buxton, England

May 17, 2022 Diedre Savory

Buxton is a spa town in Derbyshire, in the East Midlands region of England. It has the highest elevation – about 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level – of any market town in England. Close to the county boundary with Cheshire to the west and Staffordshire to the south, Buxton is described as "the gateway to the Peak District National Park". A municipal borough until 1974, Buxton was then merged with other localities lying primarily to the north, including Glossop, to form the local government district and borough of High Peak within the county of Derbyshire. Despite being in the East Midlands, economically Buxton is within the sphere of influence of Greater Manchester. The population of the town was 22,115 at the 2011 Census.

Poole's Cavern & Buxton Country Park

Poole’s Cavern is the most spectacular natural cavern in the Peak District. The cavern is famous for the spectacular and unique crystal formations including the longest stalactite formation in the region. Your expert guide will accompany you on a 45 minute journey through chambers once used as shelter and worship by prehistoric to roman visitors. See the cathedral sized main chamber carved from Limestone by an ancient river and follow safe and accessible walkways through beautifully illuminated passages on a journey deep underground. Back above ground browse through our rock and gem shop and view the archaeological discoveries from the cavern in the exhibition. Due to Covid restrictions we have a reduced cafe with take away drinks and snacks for 2020, lots of picnic tables for visitors. Complete your day with a stroll on our country park woodland trails with animal sculptures to find which lead to Solomon's Temple viewpoint at 439m above sea level and views of the Peak District.

January 2021. The gallery is closed temporarily due to Tier 4 COVID restrictions. We will re-open when these restrictions are lifted. The Green Man is a vibrant, independent gallery and arts centre, managed and run by artists. A popular creative hub for Buxton, the gallery hosts ever-changing exhibitions of contemporary art and craft by its Resident Artists and guests from across the region. Paintings, photography, printmaking, mixed media, mosaics, textiles, jewellery and ceramics plus hundreds of prints, unique gifts and cards at affordable prices. Before the pandemic, The Green Man also hosted an exciting programme of workshops, classes, live performances and other arts events and offered spaces for hire. It hopes to resume this programme once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
