The 10 Best Things to do Good for Big Groups in Ouray, Colorado (CO)

November 30, 2021 Jasper Kershner

Surrounded on all sides by snow-capped peaks and set at the narrow head of a deep valley, Ouray touts itself as the "Switzerland of America." With no nearby ski area to attract the tourism of other alpine Colorado towns, Ouray has kept much of its authentic turn-of-the-century charm. The whole town is registered as a Historic District and includes many buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Its free Ice Park attracts amateur and pro ice climbers from around the world.

We camped in the area and then drove all the way up to Sneffel's trailhead, such a beautiful area with lake, waterfall and flowers. I would love to come back and explore and hike more.

This is a place we go every time we are in Ouray. Short walk to the waterfall in the canyon, and a little longer hike to the high bridge which is still easy enough for young kids and such a great overlook of Ouray. The visitor center has an interesting display of the history of the canyon and Ouray. Don't miss Box Canyon!

Animas Forks

This place was a blast. It is fun to wandering through the old buildings and just explore. I love that they haven't restored anything and the town appears just as it was left. Would definitely recommend as a must do if you are in Silverton. You can get here by two wheel drive and lots of people do. However, we rented a RZR in Silverton and that was a much better and more fun way to get here.

Ouray Hot Springs Pool

It's always a good day for a soak in the clear warm waters of the Ouray Hot Springs Pool! The hot springs of Ouray have been enjoyed since at least the 14th century when native Ute Indians used the naturally hot clear water for healing. Settlers came to the area in the late 1800's in search of gold and precious minerals, and many found comfort in the natural hot springs. The current swimming pool was constructed in the 1920's and has been a favorite destination ever since. Seven different springs supply the pool with water. At the source some of this water is 150 degrees! The pool consists of several sections maintained at different temperatures for different tastes. The hot section is approximately 104 degrees, and a soaking section, perfect for families and prolonged soaking, is typically 95 degrees, or so. The lap lanes and deep section are usually about 80 degrees in the summer and fall, and cooler than that in the winter months when there is snow on the ground. The Ouray Hot Springs Swimming Pool is an outdoor pool open all year. Many people enjoy the pool the most in the winter, after a day spent ice climbing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, skating on the local ice rink (skates are available to rent at the Hot Springs Pool), or simply as a place to relax and enjoy the splendid scenery of the San Juan Mountains.
