SU4E - Elephant Happy Hour

The Elephant Happy Hour is an activity that we organize here in Sauraha as an ethical alternative to the riding. At the moment, there aren’t many options for elephant tourism besides riding. We give a working elephant the chance to do what she wants for an hour instead. We start with an info/safety session, followed by a short jeep ride to where the elephants work. After a short introduction (with fruits!) we stand back, observe and let her be an elephant. This activity is run by StandUp4Elephants (SU4E). We are an NGO based in Belgium but working full time in Nepal. We are 100% non-profit, all proceeds above the cost of renting the elephants' time go directly back into improving their lives. Space is limited, RESERVATION REQUIRED in advance. (WE DO NOT HAVE A PUBLIC OFFICE)

Narayani River

Reviewed By Thoughtful100 - Lincoln, United Kingdom

The mist on the river was entrancing as we were paddled down the river in dug out canoes. We had two good guides with us who knew every bird and beast, though we saw only a few due to the mist. The jungle walk back in small groups of 6 was lovely and tranquil, though again we saw little by way of animal life - it was winter which might have made the animals scarcer. All in all a couple of hours of gentle, quiet pleasure which was my favourite out of various activities we did round here. You finished the trip by crossing the river directly back to the start point on a similar canoe to the first journey. Realistically on a good day you might see the odd monkey, deer, boar, crocodile and rhino, together with lots of birds.

We enjoyed the ride, the beautiful scenery, the efficiency of cable car operators. We bought foreigner tkts so didnt have to join the v v long queue. The cable car area is also very well maintained with picturesque backdrop. But at the temple it was chaotic as most Hindu temples are. No one to guide new comers, so its even more difficult to know what to do. Anyway the queue was long, a wait of 3hrs so we had to do the shortcut puja and tried to get a glimpse of the deity through the crowds entering n exiting.
