Mount Buffalo National Park

Get closer to nature at Mount Buffalo National Park. This spectacular 'island in the sky' is home to plants found nowhere else on Earth. Sheer cliffs, granite tors, waterfalls and big views make Mount Buffalo a must-see alpine retreat. Hike through stunted Snow Gum forests, toboggan in Cresta Valley, camp at Lake Catani - and admire the view from the Horn. There's something to do in every season. Camp in the company of wombats on the shores of Lake Catani, an idyllic spot high in the Alps that's perfect for a swim. Follow the Lakeside Walk through twisted Snow Gum forests. Check out the view from The Horn, the highest point in Mount Buffalo National Park at 1,723m. Watch Australian Kestrels dive on Bogong Moths at sunset.

Great Alpine Road

This 190-mile scenic road winds its way through mountainous country, from Bairnsdale to Wangaratta.

Reviewed By Crystalline4u - Traralgon, Australia

The Great Alpine Road is a country tourist road in Victoria, Australia, running from Wangaratta in the north to Bairnsdale in the east, and passing through the Victorian Alps. The road is Australia's highest year-round accessible sealed road. It passes through lofty mountain ranges, plunging valleys, and past rolling vineyards along the way to the sparkling waterways on Gippsland's coast. So.. I joined the road at Wangaratta... got sidetracked because I needed cheese from Milawa and rejoined the road at Myrtleford... followed the road through to Bright, staying overnight at Bright...going over Hotham the next day. The road is so diverse... it's beautiful and there is a distinct difference from the Gippsland side to the High Country side. Both sides are appealing... the High Country is more populated, whereas Gippsland has vast areas that are not populated. It's an amazing drive to make... the only bit of any concern is the Mt Hotham bit... it's a bit hair-raising at times... it's a very long way down if you make a mistake.

Great Ocean Walk

Reviewed By 970bevw - Cairns, Australia

Our group of 9 friends did the self-guided 6-day Great Ocean Walk from Apollo Bay. We very sensibly used Hike2camp to provide all our needs, carry all our belongings and set up our tents in each overnight camp. We found Hike2camp run a very professional and friendly service. They provided our breakfast for us to cook or organise ourselves and a packed lunch with plenty of snacks for each day’s hiking. When we reached each day’s camp, our tents were set up with our gear in each, and we had our one-pot dinners ready for heating on the supplied gas stoves. Hike2camp take on all of the hard work and logistics, leaving hikers with the simple pleasures of just hiking during the day and enjoying the company of the other hikers at each camp site at night. I highly recommend using Hike2camp, owned and operated by young local people, who we found provided value for money.

Cathedral Range State Park

The jagged ridges of Cathedral Range State Park offer spectacular views and some of the best hiking in the state. For an easy walk try the Friends Nature Trail or the tranquil Little River Walk. Experienced walkers can tackle the Razorback Trail or take an overnight hike through the park. Follow the Southern or Northern Circuit through open forest and up rocky ridges for breathtaking views across the park. Spend a night under the stars in the company of native wildlife such as kangaroos and lyrebirds. Camp by the ruins of Cooks Mill or escape the crowds at The Farmyard hike-in camping area. There's also rock climbing for beginners and experts. Practice bouldering at The Boulders or try the tricky Sugarloaf Saddle or North Jawbone.

I did this hike with my school and we didn't really know what was ahead of us looking up the mountain. As quick as we did it (which was just under an hour), the narrow, uneven path proved challenging with the benefit of a very pretty scenery. and I wouldn't suggest rushing like I did....it gets steeper at you approach the camping grounds, until of course it starts to flatten out. - From what I could tell there wasn't anywhere to get water, and you'll need it. - the path we took to sugarloaf peak started quite smoothly but gradually becomes a truly rocky path where mistakes could be fatal. but the final view is definitely a treat no doubt. - well sign posted the whole way mind you.

Mount Abrupt

Reviewed By PhilMalone - Footscray, Australia

This is a challenging walk of around 6.5 kms return. Most of the walk to the summit is up steep sections and several steps (we counted 950 stairs in all). We completed the walk up in 1 hour and it was quite cold up the top (even though it was only early March). Once at the top you can take in unparalled views around the countryside of all the surrounding mountains and plains. Piccaninny pails into insignificance from the top of Mount Abrupt. This is well worth the effort and (having done all the Grampians walks) I would rate this one as one of the best. Do it!

We arrived on speculation, without any bookings and were surprised to find we could commence a tour, after a tasty lunch. The staff could not have been more helpful, particularly Kipp, a young personable student on a vacation job, who was knowledgeable and friendly. The museum, included in the tour price, was small but interesting and the shop was well stocked. The guided tour was comprehensive and took in all areas behind scenes and the added extra was that bikes were racing round as part of a private hire day. Perfect day not to be missed.
