The 10 Best Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

April 12, 2022 Janette Largent

Between Biarritz and the Spanish border, the Atlantic fishing village of Saint-Jean-de-Luz combines Basque charm with pleasant, family-friendly beaches on the bay. July and August are the high season here, so if you'd rather avoid the tourist crunch, either book outside of those months or plan to arrive at the beach first thing in the morning.

Eglise Saint-Jean-Baptiste

We walked over the harbour bridge after visiting the smaller 'Eglise Saint-Vincent' which is also worth visiting. However this church is on a much larger scale with a very impressive altar. The organ was also playing at the time which made for a wonderful atmosphere.

Les Halles

This a place with a particular architecture. Inside you will find little shops with local producers. They sell some fresh products like fruits, vegetables, flowers, meats and fresh fishes. This is a moment of complicity with the local producers, and a moment of discovery for your papillaes. It's possible to take a glass and some pintxos between friends. The covered market is opened every day from 7 am till 1 pm every morning all year long. A food market takes place around the covered market on Tuesday morning and Friday morning all year long and on Saturdays mornings in July-August.

Wonderful visit to this market place. Beautiful displays of fish, meat, cheese, local cakes and pastries, vegetables and fruit. Very busy. Puts our markets to shame. Lovely town to walk around too. Lovely place to visit. Closes at 1pm.

We had a lovely stay at Château d'Urtubie where we stayed two nights. The castle and its surroundings (garden, Orangerie) are extremely well maintained. Our host was very welcoming, full of local recommendations for restaurants and it was a pleasure to learn from him the history of this place.
