Distilleria Beccaris

Distilleria Beccaris was established thanks to a sort of “game of chance”. In fact , in 1951 its founder Elio Beccaris decided to start its own firm but he did not know whether it had to be a distillery, a winery or a vinegar factory. So he made his new born son Carlo decide by putting three slips of paper with the three alternatives in a hat and letting him take one, the ultimate decision should be taken by his innocent and unaware hand and it proved to be the lucky one. Carlo Beccaris now show in his personality the same rare and essential characteristics of seriousness of his firm, handicraft care and passion originating high quality. The production cycle starts at the end of the summer with the selection of the best marcs from the vineyards located in the heart of the region between Langhe and Monferrato. Then come the other phases of production: distillation, ageing, and the packaging of the bottles that every year are put on the market after a carefully controlled process.

Pierfranco and his family are so welcoming and friendly! His wife and son Gabriel explaned a lot about their vinyard and the different types of wine, which we could taste too. Not a question was too much, after a whole afternoon of asking and tasting wine, Gabriel even took us to see their beautiful vinyard. Of course we bought some bottles to share with our friends and family in Belgium!

Very difficult to find, but keep looking because it is worth it!!! We showed up an hour late and they were kind enough to wait for us. We had a private wine tasting that consisted of 10 different wines, meats cheeses and pasta. All for $35 euros per person. The food was delicious and the wine was phenomenal. This was not your average tasting! Such a variety of choices for anyone’s palette. We spent 3 hours there! The place is beautiful and the grounds are stunning.

We booked a tour and tasting here and had the best time! Fabio was our tour guide, and there was one other couple and a group of 4 others with us. The cellars are spectacular, and it was very cool to learn about the wine making and aging process. Fabio was very knowledgeable and passionate about his job, which made the tour so informative and the tasting after a blast! We tried 3 different sparkling wines, as well a few other specialty products from Contratto. Served with cheese, breadsticks, salami, and hazelnuts, it was a perfect mid-day activity! We will be ordered a few cases of our favorites from the tasting for the holidays here in the US!

Distillerie Berta

In 2002, on the eve of the harvest, the moment when the Berta family’s address took backthe place-name of Roccanivo (Casalotto di Mombaruzzo). A large structure, that decided toexpand further, built with a careful sense of ist relation to the vine hills, where it peacefully sits, with a façade of a simple house, displaying the family name on the frieze. It is a house belongingas much to grappa as to the Berta family, open and comfortable, decorated with the coats ofarms of all the surrounding regions, where wine is produced with artisanal mastery and stateof-the-art electronic systems. In a warm and cozy atmosphere, the steam-powered stills work slowly and rigorously, totransform the damp and aromatic grape pomace into something strong, but at the same timesoft and subtle.Visitors are sheltered by an antique wooden roof and breathtaking, striking views of thehilly landscape. The Berta Distilleries have become not only an obligatory stop on any itinerarydedicated to food and wine lovers flocking to these hills, but also continue to be the destinationfor so many friends from the world of entertainment and sports, artists, elite restaurateurs, and the great Italian winemaking families; all brought together by ‘that unmistakable aroma offreshly pressed grapes’.Nel 2002, l’indirizzo dei Berta recupera il toponimo di Roccanivo.

This grappa house sure is something to behold. Be sure to visit Distelleria Berta, because the premises and surroundings are absolutely breathtaking and you'll learn a lot about the history of the house Berta and the distilling process. Did you know that classical music is considered to be beneficial for the maturing process of the grappa? Me neither, but at distelleria Berta they have perfected every aspect of the grappa production process, so they play classical music in their fabulous cellars. A visit will leave you in awe and yes, the grappa is great. Though I would have preferred the lovely waitresses to be a bit more generous when pouring the grappa in our tasting glasses.
