The 10 Best Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Huatulco, Oaxaca

December 24, 2021 Cedrick Jardin

With nine bays and 36 beaches, Huatulco is ideal for anyone who loves the sun. It's not an overdeveloped resort town, but the hotels are comfortable—even luxurious. Ecotourism is gaining in popularity, so take a break from sunbathing and try river rafting or a hike through the jungle.

Chiles&Chocolate Cooking Classes

Chiles & Chocolate cooking classes offer a delicious culinary and cultural experience that explores a variety of Mexican cuisine. Our hands-on classes ensure you will leave prepared to recreate the dishes when you get home. There is no better way to get to know a place than through its food.

This was my first class with Jane (Juanita) and I would recommend it to any food lovers visiting Huatulco. She offers several classes; this one focused on seafood. We tried some really fun and different things, such as cooking shrimp in a toaster oven, and adding mayonnaise and apples to ceviche (both were great). I loved that there were lots of hands-on activities—this is definitely not a “sit back and watch” class. I also really liked that we learned a bit about the history of the region as we cooked. Jane moved here from Canada many years ago and knows so much about the area. At the end, we enjoyed the tasty results on a bright yellow table on a flower-fringed patio. It was a wonderful way to spend the morning. Note: The school is about a half-hour drive from the main hotel/condo/marina area in Santa Cruz Huatulco, but you don’t need a car; Jane arranges taxis for any guests who need transportation. I’d advise taking her up on that even if you have a car, as the school is on a narrow road that I suspect is tricky to find even with a GPS.

Temazcal del J

Reviewed By MarshallMaue - Toronto, Canada

My wife & I enjoyed a wonderful “couples session” at Temazcal del J yesterday. After reserving a time over the phone the day beforehand, a cab was sent to pick us up at our hotel (we had to pay) - good thing as the spa is tucked back in a neighbourhood we’d be lucky to find our way around. We were greeted by Monserrat, who led us through the 3-hour session with the assistance of 3 others. Between our very limited Spanish, her limited English, and some translation at the start, we were “taken on a spiritual journey”, connecting with our past, each other, our inner selves, and Mother Earth. It was recommended we bring the skimpiest bathing wear to change into, and I’d add that it ought be not “new”, as it may get stained by body rub paste. After we changed, she gave us an intro while we sipped some cooled tea, explaining the parts of the session to come and their importance to our connectivity to the sacred within and all around us. She led us through a very romantic moment that felt like a repeating of our vows, and then we entered a small “sweat lodge” to help “draw out & shed the negative” within us. Intense! We followed that with a time of meditation and a cooling shower. A paste of either chocolate, coffee, oatmeal, or red clay dust was spread over all exposed skin while we sipped a sweet warm tea, which we washed off under a warm shower. This was followed by a fabulous full-body massage. Heavenly! We finished with another cup of warm sweet tea and fresh fruit while Monserrat concluded. A taxi was called for us and we gratefully paid. 780 pesos CASH per person - well worth the experience, regardless of how deeply one connects spiritually. I HIGHLY recommend this place!

Alfredo picked us up from the port for a trip in his cool, custom VW van!! Terrific start, he shared about the his city with great enthusiasm as we drove a short distance to his amazing kitchen for his Fiesta class. Immediately we began prepping vegetable, making soups and learning about foods we were not familiar with. We made tortillas, guacamole, 3 different salsas, etc etc. After all our cooking, about an hour, that was so much fun we were able to enjoy the fruits of our labors and his lovely table along with delicious margaritas. Alfredo is the perfect host, do yourself a favor and try this experience!!!

This is close to the Dreams Resort. We had the hotel arrange for an appointment. We were able to get in right away. They came to the hotel picked us up and brought us back. We opted for the premium 3 package and weren't disappointed. The girls at the spa had limited English but we were able to communicate enough. You do pay for the service up front so don't be alarmed. They give you a tie on top and bottom to change into which was much appreciated. The first part was a dark hut with aromatherapy. It's similar to a sauna. Then, you lay down and they chant. A cold shower, a mud exfoliation (they show you how to put the mud on and you do it yourself), then a shower to wash the mud off. My skin has never felt so soft after the exfoliation. Then the best part, was a 60 minute massage. I went with a friend and we were able to be together the entire time. The process was about 2 1/2 hours from door to door.
