I went to the spa with two of my friends and we all were very satisfied with the service provided by the staff there. We got a warm welcome by the receptionist at the reception and we were given information about what kinds of service at the spa and we decided to choose Vietnamese massage with which we were very satisfied: the room where they did spa was small but cosy. The staff were well trained so we felt relaxed and pleased.

Julia the travel agent from our Family Holiday Hotel in Hanoi was able to book us a private car and driver to take us on a 3 night 4 day excursion that included Moc Chau, Dien Bien Phu and Muong Kuong. We just told her the cities we wanted to see, and she took care of everything for us, even calling the hotels in each city to make room reservations for us. We had the best driver, Mr. Ming: polite, respectful, willing to stop anytime for snacks or photos, pointing out interesting sites along the way, always on time for pickups and helping with our luggage. We were seated comfortably in a 7 passenger Toyota van. We were 5 travelers total and all were impressed by the professional courtesy. The cost was also very reasonable. We highly recommend using Julia to book personal transport arrangements off the beaten path. We have also booked a packaged Halong Bay overnight trip with her that we look forward to.

Sung Sot Cave

Situated in the centre of the UNESCO-declared World Heritage area, the Sung Sôt or Surprise Grotto is on Bo Hòn Island, and is one of the finest and widest grottoes of Ha Long Bay.Ascending to the grotto, the way is covered by trees and foliage, and consists of great paved stone blocks.Inside, it is partitioned into two chambers; the first one being similar to a wide theatre hall. Many stalactites hang from the high ceiling, with numerous possible forms and shapes.

Of the many fascinating places that we visited during our Halong Bay tour, seeing Sung Sot or Surprise Cave was certainly unique. There are many caves throughout the region, although most of the other ones that we visited were on the water. Surprise Cave is completely different as it is more of what we would consider to be a cavern with large ceilings, stalagmites, and stalactites. It is another very popular location, so the earlier in the day that you can arrive, the better off you will be. From our cruise ship, we took a small boat to the docks at Bo Hon Island where Sung Sot Cave is located. In order to get to the entrance of the cave, you must climb the approximately 50 stairs that rise high above the bay. The walls of the mountain is covered in plants and trees, but even so the entrance of the cave is visible from the docks below. Before you enter the mouth of the cave, you are rewarded with wonderful views of the bay below and all of the other ships that are there to visit the island. As you start to explore Surprise Cave, the first chamber that you enter is known as the “Waiting Room” with multicolored lights and a variety of stalagmites and stalactites. It is probably known as the waiting room because that is exactly what it is as different tour groups wait for their turn to enter the narrow passageway that takes you to the second chamber. The ceiling of the cave has unique, swirling patterns from the water that created the large caverns hundreds of years earlier. It is an opportunity for your tour guide to give a brief history of the cave and to get an appreciation of the beautiful rock formations. The second chamber, called the “Serene Castle”, is even larger and more impressive. There is a path that leads you around the various different formations, many of which that have been given different names because of things that they resemble. The most popular is one that looks like a turtle, which is a revered symbol, so people leave offerings as a blessing in order to receive long life. As you finally make your way out of Sung Sot Cave’s exit, you are once again greeted with wonderful views of Halong Bay. We visited Bo Hon Island on the final day of our Halong Bay tour and it only took us about two hours to walk through the interior of Surprise Cave. With the amazing geological features, it is certainly worth having to deal with the crowds in order to see the cave.

Ha Long Pearl

Reviewed By 334gabrielle - Toronto, Canada

I came here as part of a Signature Royal cruise through Ha Long Bay, during our visit to the floating village and oyster farm. The listing on trip advisor says it’s closed, but it’s still open. If you are planning on buying pearls and are going on a cruise, I would highly recommend doing it here - apologies in advance for the long story about why, but I think it’s really important! I had read quite a bit about pearls from Ha Long Bay before I came, and was hoping to buy some as a souvenir. However, it seemed that while they do produce pearls in Ha Long Bay that it is a risk at many of the places/vendors that the pearls are imported from China. I read a detailed post from what seemed like a reliable source about this specific place which said the pearls were high quality and produced at the farm itself. That being said, I don’t pretend to be an expert in pearls. When we arrived by kayak you could see the oysters being farmed around the floating platform. Our guide (from the cruise) explained a bit about the different types of oysters, for eating and for making pearls. We then watched a worker demonstrate how a cultured pearl is made. It was very interesting. The showroom here is small and modest which a felt was consistent with the size of the farm, and encouraged me that the pearls were in fact cultured there. The staff were happy to help out but not at all pushy. They knew the product well. I looked at a couple of pearls and found a beautiful one that I decided I wanted to buy. I asked about the possibility of a discount, and they said no but the price seemed reasonable so I decided to buy it. I’m very happy with it. It came with a certificate of authenticity for what that’s worth - I never know how valuable that is in these cases. I had read other reviews about saying the quality of the jewelry wasn’t great, so I bought the pearl loose with a plan to get it set at home. Again, I’m not an expert but to my eye the quality appears excellent. Here is what is amazing. When we were back on the ship I got a call to my room asking me to come to the reception because there was a problem with the price of the pearl. I assumed they would say they had undercharged me (though I had checked the receipt and price carefully), but no. A woman from the shop had taken a boat to our ship because she realized they had actually significantly OVERcharged me (the price on the tag had been incorrect) and wanted to correct it. There was zero hassle doing this on my credit card and she apologized repeatedly. I cannot express how incredibly impressed I am by this level of integrity and kindness. It would have been easy to say nothing and I would have never known the difference. I am so grateful to this woman for her honesty. Of course I thanked her profusely and told her there was absolutely no need to apologize at all! It sounds cheesy, but things like this really restore my faith in humanity.
