Abbaye aux Dames

The Abbaye aux Dames is today the musical hub of Saintes. It was the first convent in the Saintonge region. The nuns were powerful women, wearing crosses and striking coins. The influence of the abbey was vast. This is still true today thanks to its musical activities and its unique architectural heritage. The Notre Dames church is a pearl of Romanesque art. The portal is richly decorated. The bell tower, in the shape of a pine cone and covered in stone scales, can be visited. Why not follow the path to heaven, you'll find a panoramic view over the town of Saintes. Discover the convent building, from its chapter house to the nuns' private quarters.

The museum has been renovated beautifully with its 19th century character maintained. The precious rocks are gorgeous, the flora and fauna collections fabulous, but best of all for us was the ethnographic collection containing an extremely rare and important Easter Island figure as well as an African fang figure of superb quality, among others.

Well I admit I learnt something at this museum. The English translation pack is excellent and the journey through time is good. Much to see and to learn. It’s not a huge museum as you might expect but well worth a visit - particularly if you’re interested in WW2. Really recommend.

If you are coming to La Rochelle this is a must. The vast range of fresh products on offer is amazing. The market spills onto several streets and there is a lively bustling atmosphere. Large queues form for the most popular stores. However don’t leave it too late as the market tends to wrap up round about 1.00pm.
