The 10 Best Things to do for Honeymoon in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna

May 11, 2022 Kelli Reichel

While crowds of tourists fill Venice, Florence and Rome, Bologna remains relatively quiet in comparison. This medieval university town is charming, historic and fun to explore… and you'll find Bologna's local cuisine is light-years away from the American deli meat bearing the city's name.

Basilica - Santuario di Santo Stefano

Reviewed By Marla7 - Naas, Ireland

The Santo Stefano complex includes 7 interconnected churches, each with its own style and history, with parts dating back to the early Middle Ages. I definitely recommend to take your time to visit the whole complex, the museum and even the gift shop. Great way to escape the heat too, if visiting in the summer!

Italian cooking lessons in an Italian home! We are happy to teach you how to prepare authentic Italian dishes and although we are friendly, we are also quite serious about teaching you the right way to make these dishes and ensuring that you will be able to replicate these back home. Your success back home is our objective. We are professional and experienced but not stuffy or arrogant. Our specialty is pasta making, the old fashioned way; the way the Italian grandma's still make it (with a wooden rolling pin and board)! You will make several pasta shapes and sauces and won't miss anything! We also teach how to cook with local specialties like Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, Bologna Mortadella and Prosciutto from Parma. We cook with fresh seasonal produce, meats, and seafood. Lessons are personalized and held in small groups (1-3, up to 6 if related or close friends) to assure plenty of one-on-one attention. Our hands-on cooking lessons are held in a home setting. No surcharge for single participants or private lessons. Discounts for children. Lessons available in English, Spanish or Italian.

Latest Update: I am open for classes and market tours in Bologna as of August 2020! I have been running classes since 1999 and I plan to continue. I have always only taken very small groups and given the Covid -19 crisis, I guarantee you will only shop and cook with your family or travelling companions, not with people you don't know. For market tours and market shopping, we'll avoid narrow and crowded streets and still shop at some top purveyors for Bologna's renowned gastronomic products and its superb quality fresh produce. In my well-ventilated open space apartment, social distancing is easy and I will have ample supplies of medical masks and sanitising gels on hand for you. If you can't get (back) to beautiful Bologna just yet, then as you'll see from my Tripadvisor reviews, I am offering on line classes, both group demo classes and private classes tailored to your requests. Email me to enquire about the possibilities, I'll be waiting to hear from you. Carmelita

Basilica di San Petronio

Reviewed By adaniels83 - Leeds, United Kingdom

This is a beautiful elegant and rather large church, entry is free, if you would like to take photos inside then there is a €2 charge with the proceeds going towards restoration of the many elements of the church. I read many times about people not being allowed in wearing shorts... that is a lie there were plenty of people wearing shorts and with legs on show and there was not one bit of animosity towards them!! The workmanship of the church is quite stunning and in my opinion a must see, the torri degli Asinelli was closed for renovations on our trip so as an alternative way of obtaining Ariel views of the city go to the rear of the church where for €3 you can get to the top and a viewing platform where the views are great.

Le Due Torri Torre degli Asinell

The colossal towers were built by Bologna's important families in the 12th century.

Reviewed By minkerryc

It is not often you get to climb a medieval tower nearly 1000 years old. There are 500 steps and those with claustrophobia or fear of heights may struggle. The view at the top is worth it though.
