B-413 Submarine Museum

The submarine is one of the most popular objects of the Museum of the World Ocean. The B-413 was built in Leningrad and was launched in September, 1968. During 30 years it had been serving in the North and Baltic Fleets. The submarine was moored at the museum quay in June, 2000. It is the only one in the country and a few in the world belonging to pre-atomic period of undersea fleet. Moreover, it is preserved in its original state. Firm and light hulls, superstructure, all the major and auxiliary mechanisms, equipment and weapons are the same as they were after the submarine was excluded from the Navy. What strikes you most as you walk along the narrow corridors and squeeze through the seemingly miniscule portholes that protect each section, is the incredible mechanical complexity. This 1960s technology required pipes, cumbersome and hard wearing switches and large well worn wheels to keep the submarine either afloat or submerged, as needs dictated.

This is no doubt the best place to Visit in the city. For me it was amazing to be inside of a true red army submarine. Totally out of this World place. MUST SEE. The rest of the musuem of the ocean is not worth a visit, but the submarine for sure is. Don’t buy tickets for the rest of the attractions, just go straight here.

National park Curonian Spit

Reviewed By nevzatv2014 - Ankara, Turkey

I admire Curonian Spit, perhaps one of the most amazing and impressive natural beauties of Lithuania, and the effort to protect it. This area, also called the Sahara of the Baltic Sea and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, consists of about 90 km long narrow saber-shaped dunes that divide the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. Curonian Spit and its surroundings is a national park that is very well protected by the state. In this national park created with pine trees that people have planted with their hands for years, they have carefully lived more than 30 species of endangered birds and more than 800 different plants. I can say that I have never seen such a good visuality anywhere else in the world. The charming town of Nida and the small "Ethnographic Homestead of Fisherman" named fishing house museum, "Gintaro Galerija Muziejus" named amber museum and "the Horizontal Granite Sundial" are also worth visiting in Curonian Spit.

The center of musical antiquities executes the scientific program for detection and restoration in forms and sounding of ancient music instruments of the 10-15th centuries, evidence of which archaeologists discover in the old part of Veliky Novgorod. The cultural and educational program of the Center includes exhibitions, tours, consulting, lecture-demonstrations dedicated to the musical culture of ancient Novgorod.

Various ancient music instruments presented here will tell their story. If you are visiting Veliky Novgorod you must visit this wonderful place with the great atmosphere. You will be told a story of the ancient Russian city, the medieval capital through acquaintance with the music of this time. The storyteller is genius, who loves her work and keeps this place. The museum was created by Vladimir Povetkin, who was a legendary person in Novgorod, he reconstructed many instruments by himself and was playing them. The excursion during the working days is mainly dedicated to the history of the city and this amazing place while the musical instruments are the focus of the story during the weekends. Anyways, we have enjoyed music from all the instruments in the end of our excursion. We were about to dance as they sound amazing! We are truly grateful to the highly dedicated and professional staff of the museum. We will come back!

Fort XI Donhoff

Fort XI Donhoff is the fortified structure built in 1877-1882. It is one of 12 forts composing the outer fortification ring of former Fortress Koenigsberg previously called "Night feather-bed of Konigsberg". In the end of the Second World War on April 7, 1945 the garrison located in Fort XI capitulated practically without fight. On this reason it is the most undisturbed and well-preserved fort among other Kaliningrad forts. Nowadays guests visiting Fort XI Donhoff have possibility to touch pure history and see with their own eyes the part of Koenigsberg defensive system that existed before 1945. There are such interesting exhibits and objects as original German gate, iron spiral staircases, barracks corridors, an observation post, the operating lifting mechanism for a raising of ammunition, etc. Now it is under the management of a private company that preserves its identity and develops the fort as a museum, touristic, cultural and artisan center.

Varyazhsky Dvor means Viking's Yard in Russian but it actually has another - and by far simpler a name - Svargas which is translated from Indo-European as Sunny Sky. This is a purely private project which is sixteen years old. Their life has been tough - constant fight with local red tape and corruption, volatile cash-flow and even a direct arson attack from hostile competitors. They were burnt virtually to ashes (!!!) and reconstructed the whole thing with their own hands! (One can still see charred walls on the second (English - first) floor. To understand what goes on there please read a review by the guy from Vermont. I'd only add that you can also try a smashing old-style lunch there - Vikings' cabbage or pea (no rubbish cream!) soup and home-made ham hock (Haxe, Eisbein) with potatoes. But - attention! - this service is oursourced so please get in touch with the complex in advance and bear in mind that if the guys are missing there'll be absolutely no opportunity to even have a snack there. So mind it in the course of your planning. But if they ARE there then first thing to do upon arrival should be approaching them and making an order. Then go to their smithy, throw axes, shoot a bow, try chainmail and other medieval haute couture stuff, etc. 'coz in an hour the meals will be ready and you won't have to wait. Their parking is rather modest and this should be taken into account as well. And toilets... Mind-blowing smell. Get ready for a simple obsolete outhouse. Very disappointing. Apart from this - magnificent and very interesting. Recommended!

The Shadow Museum

"Shadow Museum" is a unique art space where modern art objects in the style of shadow art are represented. All the art works are connected in a unified exposition, the excursion "St. Petersburg of shadows" is provided in Russian and English. The museum also has a creative kitchen where all the visitors have a chance to enjoy a cup of tea and share their impressions or create their own art works.

The Shadow Museum displays a style of art that I have not seen anywhere else. We were given a guided tour, in English, of the artwork some of which was very clever. It is not the longest tour ever, we were there a little under an hour, but for less than a fiver a head, it is well worth a visit!
