Trying to get to Istanbul from Varna, I learned much from the folks at Unitrans, who used to drive the whole way before COVID-19 struck and changed all the rules, for they had to stop at the border where I could meet a Turkish taxi I had arranged. To their credit, their communication was excellent and helped me to invent this solution. The driver they assigned to the trip, Dimitar, spoke excellent English and provided good companionship as well as an occasional comment about things we were passing, such as the largest fresh water lake in Bulgaria. The time flew. As we approached the border, we developed a Plan B just in case Turkey turned me away — a hotel in a nearby Bulgarian village where I might rest up for another attempt. He was not allowed to drive up to the Turkish gate, but he did an excellent job of chatting with the Bulgarian border guards who were not very busy and chose to give me extra attention in a charming way. I am sure that he told them lots of things that eased my passage. A diplomat, for sure. It was a really wonderful experience.

It was our first meeting with Plovdiv, so we wanted it to be perfect for us. And I am very thankful to Marin for making our trip wonderful in every detail. The car was very clean and comfortable. Driver was punctual, highly professional, knowledgable, polite and very friendly. Also he spoke russian, so it was very easy to communicate. We were really enjoying every minute of this trip. Highly recommend!
