The 10 best Specialty lodgings in Belize,

May 2, 2023 Sachiko Swiger

According to famed diver Jacques Cousteau, the Great Blue Hole of Belize is one of the most spectacular dive sites on earth. The crystal-clear sapphire waters are home to colorful tropical fish and several species of reef sharks – ideal for brave divers who love to get up close and personal with sea life. On dry ground, diverse rainforests, mangrove swamps, and Mayan ruins are perfect for exploration. The beaches of Belize are sunny and tranquil spots for a day of relaxation.

My family and I love this place!!! It has a beautiful environment, nature hikes, a creek to swim and tube in, yoga platform, hammocks, is in the jungle, you can see so many stars at night, wake up to the birds and fall asleep to the sounds of the night animals. Fresh air all the time. The staff are the kindest sweetest hearted people. The food is delicious. Comfy beds, warm showers. It’s central to many national parks and adventures. And they have a shuttle. I’ve stayed here solo, as a couple and with family and friends for special events. Each time is unique and special. What’s amazing is that they also support Belizean children get an education to help break the poverty cycle. My family, friends and I highly recommend this place. Enjoyed our 6 night stay. Our 1 bdrm suite was elegantly furnished and spacious. It had a full kitchen. We love our patio with the oceanview. The only problem is the sargussum smell which is a big problem for many Carribean islands and coasts. It is not solely the problem of Caye Casa. Jake, Justin, and the rest of the staff were friendly. It is in a nice location close to bars, restaurants, and supermarkets yet quiet at night.

A gorgeous property about halfway down the peninsula. The decor of the "Great House" is quintessential Belizean, with hardwoods and open air. The room was clean and the staff very hospitable. Alfresco dining in the courtyard under the cashew trees at night was fabulous. We found the food to be worthy of any fine dining restaurant stateside.

This hotel was wonderful. We had a great 2 bedroom apartment on the penthouse level. One more floor up to roof and pool area. It was great, breezy, small pool but oh so refreshing. It was right in town, you could see the parade of golf carts going up and down. You can see the barrier reef from up the roof. We had a great time in San Pedro and at this hotel. But no elevator so you do have to walk up 4 flights of steps - great exercise!

One of the best vacations we've ever taken, and that is saying a lot. We both walked around totally euphoric the entire week. Because it's in a protected area it has really healthy fish and coral. Totally off the grid and gloriously isolated. But it's really the whole operation that is so exceptional. They've got incredible staff that love their job and love sharing their special place. There are SO many different water activities available, but you're free to opt out and just read or SUP on your own or whatever. And they make everything so easy and fun - For example, they taught wind surfing one day and broke it down so it was super easy and doable by all ages. One of the best parts was being part of such a nice sized group of other super cool people and super fun guides. We laughed SO much! Slickrock has been at it for a long time and have incredibly good systems in place. Perfectly sized and operated. The only thing that could use improvement is the food. Some things were a 10 out of 10 (local fish), but some were a 2 or a 3. They are really good at baking, but need to work on dishes besides bread/pastries and cheese/butter. I'd also like to see more local foods (we only had plantains once!) Being dairy and grain free usually meant going without, although occasionally they made me a potato or squash pancake, which was great. Fresh coconut water and coconut meat was SO nice! Juice mixers for cocktails have sugar and other additives so I stuck to the coconut water and healthy juice powders I brought with me. Overall, stellar operation. So easy and free and playful and fun filled. Wind only blew strong enough one afternoon for kite surfing (4/16-4/23). A foil would not work with all the coral in shallow water. Launch is tough, but the guides are eager to help. Surfing didn't pan out at all that week either, although kayak surfing was small but fun 2 days. Still loads of other activities to do. They have to burn all their trash (including plastic) so try to not bring any plastic that will end up in the trash, or pack it out with you. Scuba diving with "Off the Wall" (the other resort on the island) was fun. But we mostly like the snorkeling better because you could ask questions of the guides and learn about what you are seeing. The guides were SO knowledgable.

Great views and excellent service…but not a resort.

Reviewed By kellyj424

We spent a week at the La Beliza resort with two teenagers. The 2 BR condo itself is spacious and the balcony overlooking the water delivers on the photos. That said, we primarily booked the property due to all the positive reviews re: the restaurant and pool bar. There is no restaurant or pool bar and many of the photos in the TripAdvisor listing are outdated - hammocks, the life size chessboard, and the volleyball net are no longer there. They do have paddle boards and kayaks that you can take out to the reef although it was windy season so we didn’t get to take advantage of that. There is no water sports/tour desk on property either (although Andrei did connect us with a great dive shop - white sands - in advance of arrival). There are restaurants about a mile in either direction (Sapphire and Box Balaam) that are both good and they will deliver but you really need cash for delivery although Sapphire was nice enough to let us wait to pay until we got more cash on a night w a crazy rainstorm. There are also a couple of convenience stores about a quarter of a mile away for basics (one takes cards, one is cash only) - drinking water (property provides a gallon and then charged), coffee, beer, and some non perishables but would highly recommend getting groceries in town at the Super Buy before coming up north. Our cab driver arranged by hotel was nice enough to let us stop when we arrived. I would also recommend bringing plenty of cash to avoid ATM fees / the only ATM we could get to work was the Belizean bank in town which had a withdraw limit. The resort is remote - 8 miles from town. 4 of those miles are on a really bad road. 4 are fine. You absolutely need a golf cart - we booked through Maya and had two bum carts so would recommend a different hardware store. Andrei (the main person on site) was super responsive to all of questions and helped us out w some recommendations. Overall, the Belizean culture is super hospitable and the food is amazing.

Quiet, well kept resort!

Reviewed By Centerice99

We were booked here via Padi Travel (we are scuba divers). We stayed in the Ruby room. The resort was so quiet. I saw only 2 other couples. The breakfast lounge is very clean and neat. I sat outside each morning with coffee and never saw anyone. We had drinks down by the pool one evening and were the only ones there. Previous reviews mention the loud music but we never heard any. Breakfast was delicious as well. The location is great - just 1 block from the water and our dive company (Neptune’s Cove). We stayed for 5 nights. I would definitely stay here again!
