This tour was the best! The guide Olivia took us through the stallion barn where we saw some of the most beautiful stallions that were all top notch. Her passion for the horses was obvious as she told us about each one and about their distinct personalities. Her explanation of the breeding operation and the daily life of these stallions was so informative. The shuttle tour of the beautiful farm was also very enjoyable with Olivia and Ann providing more information about how the foals and mares are cared for. Seeing this behind the scenes operation will make watching racing much more enjoyable for me. I would recommend this tour to everyone who has any interest in thoroughbred horses.

Pin Oak Stud

Pin Oak Stud is truly a little gem in the thoroughbred world. Loving horses at an early age, a desire of mine for many years was to visit “Horse Country.” Passing through the area with only time to visit one thoroughbred farm, I chose this farm from the wonderful reviews I read and what seemed to be the farm’s attention to bringing a personal touch to the tour. My husband, two daughters, and I were very pleased with our tour. As soon as I bought tickets online, I was welcomed with an email from Nancy and invited to let her know of any requests we had to make our upcoming tour memorable. Prior to the tour, Nancy corresponded with me and answered my questions concerning accommodations for my daughter who uses a walker and gave us several ideas for dining. After arriving to the farm, we were warmly greeted in the luxurious office area and provided with cold water and bathrooms. There was a little special surprise for us when parking at the farm office that I won’t disclose so others can be pleasantly surprised as we were. Nancy was extremely knowledgeable about the farm, horses, and the business. All the beautiful, modern, barns were very accessible, which was wonderful for our daughter who uses a walker. We were able to get very close while viewing the stallions, mares with their foals, and yearlings. My favorite part was being up close and seeing all the mares with their adorable foals. An added treat was watching the veterinarian/ferrier examining and treating a yearling with a hoof problem. The ferrier was kind enough to give us a memento of a racing horseshoe. The tour was absolutely perfect for us, and I highly recommend it.

Jack Jouett House Historic Site

The Jack Jouett House Historic Site is a historic house museum owned and operated by the Woodford County Fiscal Court. It was the home of Captain John (Jack) Jouett, Jr., the Revolutionary War hero whose 40-mile ride through the backcountry of Virginia most likely saved American Independence. In Kentucky, Jack was a legislator, farmer, horse breeder, and distiller. Jack’s wife was Sally Robards Jouett. Their son, Matthew Harris Jouett (one of the 19th century’s most gifted and well-known portraitists), grew up in the home. The museum is open April through October on Fridays 1-5), Saturdays (10-5), Sundays (1-5), and Mondays (12 - 2) and by appointment all year. The frontier homestead includes a 1780s stone cabin, used as a kitchen by the Jouetts, and a 1797 Federal-style brick house with parlor, dining room, and three bedrooms. The grounds feature a Colonial Herb Garden, a Native Tree Walk, and a Woodford County Quilt Trail quilt square.

Wandering around the gardens, visiting the goats (with the option of doing rooftop yoga with them!) and other farm animals stressing the farm-to-table style in all ways! The menu changes depending on availability of items, but is deliciously eclectic, especially with their infused vodkas from local distilleries making the Best Bloody Marys Ever!
