Great Meteoron Monastery

Reviewed By ek7833

On 22 June 2019, we took a 4-hour train from Athens to Kalabaka to visit the meteora monasteries and took another 4-hour train back. It was a tour organised by Meteora Thrones. We visited 3 monasteries and see the other 3 from strategic spots. Excellent tour. Thanks to the organizer. Of the 3 we visited viz. the Great Meteoron Monastery, the Variaam and St Stephen monastery, the Great Meteoron Monastery is the biggest and required more effort to reach and has the most impressive views of the plains and rock formation. To reach this Byzantine monastery, we had to up the steps under the midday sun when the temperature reached 34 degree in celsius. But It was worthwhile believe me. The Monastery was built on a steep rock column which rises to a height of more than 400 metres (1,300 ft). The whole Monastery was in good shape. The museum, the open courtyards, the chapel are well preserved. The views looking down from above was astonishing, impressive and breathtaking. Walking inside this medieval treasure, we could not imagine how the ancient monks and nuns built the monastery and how they could live in there without external supports. We could only appreciate their untiring effort and desire to connect human with the Divine. A highly recommended activity when visiting Athens.

If you go to Mykonos, please make sure to visit this church. It is just such a stunning and a not to be missed site. This is the oldest church in Mykonos which dates back to the late 14th century. It consists in 5 churches in one. They were not all built at once but rather added as time passed by throughout the centuries.

Church of Saint Spiridon

Saint Spyridon Church , the miraculous and Saint of Corfu The history and the tradition of our local Church from 1456 is imminently connected with Saint Spyridon. The arrival of his holy relic from Istanbul, his staying in Corfu, the built of his church along with the establishment of five big feasts based on Him led the christians to believe that Corfu cannot exist without Him. But even our local Church owes Him a lot. Not only did He protect it during the hard times of the Venetian Occupation, but also from other foreign occupations. French, Russians, English, Italians and Germans have passed over our island, staying for different lapses of time.

Hi, The church has a lot of history behind. There are benches inside so you can sit and contemplate. Around the church are a lot of good stores where you can buy a lot of religious souvenirs.

Osios David (The Latomou Monastery)

Reviewed By carolas936 - Marietta, United States

The Church of Osios David is a late 5th-century Byzantine church in the upper town, sitting in a shaded courtyard with an expansive view over the lower town and harbor. According to tradition, the church was founded by Theodora (the daughter of the emperor Maximianus who ruled 286 - 305). She supposedly used a Roman bathhouse as a Christian shrine and concealed its mosaic to dispel her mother's suspicions of her conversion to Christianity. A church was founded in the late 5th century probably dedicated to the prophet Zacharias, replacing the bathhouse (and reusing its stones). The church became the katholikon (public chapel) of the Latomos Monastery. The modest church was built in a cross plan (without a dome), with a porch on the front. The interior walls are covered with richly-colored 12th-century frescoes. I was most impressed by the 5th-century mosaic of the Theophany over the apse: Christ holds a Greek scroll, “Behold our God, in whom we hope and we rejoice in our salvation, that he may grand rest to this home”, and is surrounded by symbols of the four evangelists (an angel, eagle, lion, and bull, symbolizing Matthew, John, Mark and Luke). The four rivers of Paradise (the Phison, Geon, Tigris and Euphrates) flow beneath Christ's feet, their waters feeding the river Chobar (or Jordan). After the Ottoman conquest, the building was converted into a mosque (probably in the 16th century), the art was covered with plaster, and a minaret was added at the south-west corner bay (the base remains). Osios David was reconsecrated (and given its present name) as a Greek Orthodox church in 1921 after the Greek liberation of Thessaloniki. The frescoes and mosaics were restored, and the church was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1988. The church is open every day except Monday from 10am -5pm; it closes at 2pm on Sunday. When I visited there was no entry fee, but I left a donation with the lady who was the caretaker.
