The 10 Best Private Tours in Messina, Sicily

December 12, 2021 Sachiko Swiger

At Sicily’s northeast tip, Messina is the first city being kicked by mainland Italy’s boot, just three miles across the Strait of Messina. It's a main port of entry for visitors via hydrofoils and ferries. Trains board the ferry, too, before continuing service. The 12th-century Norman cathedral, rebuilt after a 1908 earthquake destroyed it and much of the town, is the most famous attraction.

We did a private wine country tour with Francesco in October 2019 (it has taken me entirely too long to write this review). We had a great time with Francesco. He is so personable and was so much fun to spend the day with. Ask him to tell you the story of why there are black roosters on Chianti Classico wine bottles. Francesco is very professional, was able to accommodate a change in plans based on our preferences, and delivered top-notch service throughout the day. If (when) we go back to Florence, we will be giving Francesco a call!

Incredible experience. Pasquale is a very nice and upbeat person. He took us to the best wineries. From the moment he picked us up it was clear that he had the entire day in perfect control. He is always professional and also fun. We really enjoyed the wine and food and the cellar tours. Pasquale even sent us several pictures from the day of fun that we had together. It was the highlight of our trip to Sicily. The communication was great - I asked Pasquale to arrange to have a cake for my girlfriend's birthday ... he made sure that at every destination there was a cake and everyone sang. He made me look like a hero! Thank you Pasquale!!!

Experience this part of Sicily and discover a fragile world that thrives on and is threatened by its surroundings. Mt. Etna, where the legend says the god of fire Hephaestus has its forges, is a spectacular active volcano that offers a mixed panorama, made of lunar deserts of black lava and lush vineyards where the local DOC wine is produced. Taormina, perched on the side of the mountain and very close to the volcano, is a famous resort town where the second largest Roman theatre in Sicily is located. This incredible example of Roman architecture is still used today and several performances throughout the year are hosted there.

Inclusions: Private transportation, Air-conditioned vehicle, stop at Mt Etna, Stop in Taormina

Exclusions: Entrance fees, if required, Meals and Drinks, Gratuities

Fabulous route along the seaside and climbing up the roadways to viewpoints with tremendous views. Great snack and coffee stops. We even got to see the start of a local wedding and the bride's entrance at the cathedral. Roberto got us some wonderful pastries at the coffee shop/bakery owned by his family in one of the towns we went through. Along the way he answered any and all questions from medieval history to current events as well as guiding us to some great photo opportunities.
