The 10 Best Private Tours in La Paz, La Paz Department

March 24, 2022 Hector Krause

Sitting in a valley in the Andes Mountains, La Paz is the city that touches the clouds. The de facto capital of Bolivia, and sitting between 3300 and 4100 meters above sea level, La Paz is the highest capital city in the world. Rich with 19th century churches, museums of artifacts from the pre-Conquest era, precarious overlooks, and colorful markets, La Paz is truly unique. The Witches’ Market, in the center of the city, sells charms and potions for Aymara rituals, as well as souvenirs.

We booked a tour to the Valley of The Moon and Mt Chacaltaya out of LaPaz. We were there in November, 2019 during the post election protests. We met our guide, Patti, at a rendezvous point near the Prada. The pick up was about 30 minutes late. The part of the tour to the Valley of the Moon was canceled due to protestors blocking the road. We received no refund. We did drive to Mt Chacaltaya and scrambled to the top. Although the walk is not steep and the path pretty good, be prepared for a tough climb given the altitude of about 17,000 feet. You will need to take numerous stops and the climb will take longer than you expect. The views of the surrounding Andes Mountains was spectacular. Well worth the effort. Overall the trip was fine, but make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. Also, we were somewhat disappointed by the reluctance of our guide to stop and allow us to take pictures at various places on the trip. If you choose to take this trip, be sure to inquire carefully about the logistics.

Me and a friend climbed Huyana Potosi in January 2020 with Pedro from Bolivia Mountaineering. I can only recommend to do the tour with him. A few days before the trip I met up at his office and he took his time (at least 1,5 hours) to discuss everything about the trek. After that I felt well informed what to expect. He was very honest about the level of difficulty and the dangers of climbing huyana potosi, but at the same time he gave me the feeling that I can do it (I wasn't that sure about it before that). He was also flexible regarding the starting date. We waited for a few days to start the trek in order to start on a day the weather forecast was more promising (it was during rainy season, so most days weren't very suitable to climb the mountain). We decided to climb it in only 2 days (1 night). However, we've already spent 1-2 weeks in altitudes above 3500 metres. If you're not acclimatized yet,it probably makes more sense to do it in 3 days (and spend some days in and around la paz, there are lots of other day hikes you can do such as Pico Austria to get prepared). The equipment he provided us was in a good condition. The first day we climbed to the refuge (at around 5200 metres of altitude). After arriving at the shelter we went to the glacier and he explained us how to walk in the ice/snow with the crampons, how to make use of the ice axe, etc. I felt well prepared to get to the summit after this. After that we had dinner and went to bed, as you have to wake up at midnight to start climbing the summit (the food/snacks we got provided with were good). We started walking around 1-1.30 am. Pedro (and the other guide who came with us) were patient when we needed breaks, but at the same time he tried to push us a little and therefore gave us the confidence to make it to the top. I'm not going to lie, the climb is not easy at all, not very technical, only one part you have to climb in the ice, but the altitude makes it very hard. But it's very rewarding, definitely my best experience in South America so far. If you're in La Paz and want to climb huyana potosi, I can only recommend to do it with Pedro and Bolivia Mounteneering! Thanks!
