June 2, 2021 Concepcion Newsome

With its gondolas, canals, amazing restaurants, and unforgettable romantic ambiance, Venice is definitely a city for one's bucket list. Waterfront palazzos, palaces, and churches make drifting down the Grand Canal feel like cruising through a painting. To really experience Venice you must go to the opera or to a classical music performance, nibble fresh pasta and pastries, and linger in the exhibit halls of an art gallery. Label lovers will drool over the high-end shopping in Piazza San Marco.

Alberto Sarria Masks

I'm Sofia and I'm the owner of Alberto Sarria Masks, a small workshop established in 1986 by my father in Venice, where I create handmade masks and marionettes using the traditional techniques. I was born in Venice, where I raised up surrounding by paper, paint, and brushes in my parents’ studio, developing my artistic techniques first as a game and then in art school. Six years ago I decided to carry on the work of my family, to give my contribution in saving the most authentic Venice.

After 3 days in Venice, going into what felt like *every* mask shop we passed (because I wasn't prepared and definitely naive), I walked into Alberto's shop as a last-ditch attempt because of a gator mask in the window and it was essentially directly below the Airbnb we were staying at. I was in awe. There's a small handful of 'typical' masks, even those are well designed/painted, but the majority are truly unique and incredible. I literally spent 10 minutes on my own, brought my sister-in-law in for another 5, and then a final 10 with my wife before ultimately buying 2 male/female matching masks. Had I been in a "money is no object" mood, I would've bought at least 5 that I really struggled to walk away from. Plus, the beautiful young lady (I assume after reading these other reviews must've been Alberto's daughter), busily working on an incredible Pinocchio-type mask, never offered any shipping solutions. Bottom-line, save yourself the time and hassle of searching the city, and ensure an authentic artistic product, by heading directly to Alberto Sarria's shop! For what it's worth, that Airbnb was awesome, the lady running the restaurant next door was great, and I found the best coffee, espresso, cufflinks, gelato, etc. all on that one block!
