The 10 Best Other Outdoor Activities in Colorado, United States

October 28, 2021 Karren Gelb

Colorado is home to no less than twenty-six ski resorts such as those in Vail and Breckenridge; other winter activities include snowboarding, sledding, sleigh rides, snow hiking and snowmobiling. The state is blessed with national parks, grasslands and forests where in warmer weather you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking or rock climbing. Wildlife abounds, from bears to moose and raccoons to wolverines. More interested in local history? Head for either the Ute Indian Museum or the Koshare Indian Museum, and don't miss the forts such as Fort Garland and Bent's Old Fort. For a complete change, why not take a ride in a hot air balloon from South Park Valley or Boulder and admire Colorado's picturesque landscape from above?

Booked San Juan Outdoor Adventures as guides for a Via Ferrata trip in June of 2020. Honestly could not recommend these guys more! Chris was our guide and he really put in the extra time to explain everything from the trail to the gear (they provided) to any helpful tips along the way. We also had the added benefit of Josh (one of the owners who helped build the Via Ferrata) who tagged along with our group just to make sure the path was properly maintained and as safe as it could be. Both of these guys were very professional and extremely supportive. It really helped turn a fear of heights at the beginning of the trip into more of a cautious respect for them over time which really helped me enjoy the magnificent scenery and turned this adventure into a breathtaking experience. Well worth the price for an unforgettable afternoon! Would recommend good hiking boots/climbing shoes and or gloves in addition to the equipment they provide.

Imogene Pass

Reviewed By RichSGF - Springfield, United States

Imogene pass is not for the faint of heart. We were lucky enough to take Alpine Scenic Jeep Tours in our tour guide was funny informative and kept his cool the entire time The trip was somewhat adventurous and did have its problems the driver said that he had tried to get up this past four times earlier and due to the rain in the mud it was just not doable but we got lucky and plowed through and made it to the top. If you ever wanted to know what it was like to be in Switzerland without actually going there, you would want to take this journey. The sights the colors the blue skies and the flowers were just amazing. Thanks to the crackerjack crew of the company and the owner, they made our journey ever more memorable. It may be a while for some folks are able to get back up there again as the road is in pretty rough shape but when it’s safe do give it a shot.

Fabulous scenic overlook on the Million Dollar Highway. This is either the first stop if you're traveling South to North, or the last if you're going the other way. We were traveling to Montrose, so this was the first & the only one where he was willing to stop. Large parking lot. Information boards & a short walk. Pit toilet restrooms. An indescribable view. It was great & I recommend taking a break here!

This is an amazing hike. Not for beginners or small children. It took us about 3 hours to the top. It’s very steep at the top and rocky but well worth the views. Absolutely beautiful. Take water and a few snacks and of course a camera!!!!!!!!! You won’t be disappointed.
