The 10 Best Nature & Wildlife Areas in North Holland Province, The Netherlands

March 3, 2022 Giuseppe Pratt

Mostly jutting northward from its largest city of Amsterdam and its capital of Haarlem, the Noord-Holland region has much more to offer beyond those two wonderful cities. At Muiden is the magnificent Muiderslot Castle, as if it stepped out of a fairy tale. Showing more wear but no less interesting is Brederode Castle at Santpoort. At Zaanstad is Zaanse Schans, one of Holland’s top tourist destinations and a family-friendly open air museum of windmills, traditional buildings, crafts and shops.

Schoorlse Duinen

We completed the 10km Noordsee route starting at Buitencentrum Schoorlse duinen. Fantastic and varied walk through woods, heath, dunes and beach. A bit heavy going due to walking on sand most of the time. Wish we'd visited a couple of weeks earlier when the heather was in bloom.

A beautiful dune reservation, with superb cycle paths running throughout. You can stray off and enjoy a walk along the many footpaths too. I recommend heading to the beach, it is a reward worth capturing. Magnificent place !
