The 10 Best Nature & Parks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (WI)

February 23, 2022 Jacquiline Darosa

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee is perhaps best known for its famous breweries and the Major League Brewers, but there's more to the city than beer and baseball. Milwaukee is rich in historical and cultural attractions, making it the perfect place for a weekend of exploring. Check out the newly expanded Milwaukee Art Museum or the Mitchell Park Horticultural Society, which hosts an annual show of the same flora and fauna seen in Georgia O'Keefe's paintings. Those interested in the city's history can visit the grand Pabst Mansion, former home of one of the city's famous beer barons, or the Milwaukee Public Museum, to see what life was like in Old Milwaukee. If the kids are along, don't miss the Milwaukee County Zoo or the Betty Brinn Children's Museum. Of course a trip to the "Genuine American City" would not be complete without a tour of the Miller Brewing Company and a Brewers game at Miller Park.

O'Donnell Park

This park, which technically now has the official name of “Museum Center Park,” sits at the eastern edge of downtown at the end of E Wisconsin Avenue. It’s a beautiful site with great vistas: to the east, you see the futuristic white form of the Milwaukee Art Museum set before the blue background of Lake Michigan; to the west you look straight down a street lined with both modern and historic buildings in a vibrant urban fabric. This park is probably more pleasant in warmer weather than in colder. I appreciated the breezes that swept off the lake, but I can definitely see that adding a tough wind chill to already-cold temperatures in winter. Anyway, you can access the art museum via a footbridge that leads from O’Donnell Park directly to the entrance; you can also descend staircases on either side of the footbridge to reach Lincoln Memorial Drive and the lakeshore down below.

It was worth the entry fee. The zoo keepers and the volunteers were so knowledgeable and friendly. They had such a wide variety of animals, birds, reptiles and aquatic life. The zoo is so clean and beautiful. Yes I would definitely go back and tell lots of people about it.

Wisconsin is well known for their festivals and a ton of them are held right in downtown Milwaukee at Henry Maier. There’s obviously Summerfest but there’s a lot of ethnic festivals held almost every weekend in summer there. Some of them include Polish Fest, Festa Italiana, and Irish Fest. There are also lots of walks and runs for organisations there. Nice, big festival ground with views of the lake.

Stay up top and play. The par 3 golf course is great or stay and play boccie with the locals. You can't beat a lazy summer Sunday afternoon at Lake Park.
