The 10 Best Nature & Parks in Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai Province

July 5, 2021 Enedina Augsburger

You could spend your whole Chiang Mai vacation exploring the famous Night Bazaar. Once you’ve exhausted the art of the cheerful haggle, however, there’s plenty more to explore. The National Museum and Botanic Garden are great places to soak up some local culture and to breathe in the delicate fragrance of Thai orchids. In the city’s center, the remains of ancient walls embrace over 30 temples. Limber travelers can climb 300 stairs to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, an ornate Buddhist temple in the hills.

Elephant Green Hill Project is a new elephant sanctuary started end of 2018. They house a total of four elephants including a baby elephant. Visit to the sanctuary was a great experience. Was great to be able to spend a day close to the elephants: feeding them, taking a walk, help elephants with a bud bath, and bathing with elephants in the river. Baby elephant is particularly cute as he is very playful. Was very fun to be able to watch the baby elephant playing in bud and trying to steal more snacks/food. Definitely recommend a visit, would be very educational for children as well. Was guide Pat was great also, explaining many details and stories of the different sanctuary and current situation.

Our largest fish were astimated to be around 50 kg. Was very happy to see the conditions and care of the fishes. We made the decision to visit the Elephant Care sanctuary as we were literally driving past and it wound up being the highlight of our day. For a fairly small fee we were allowed to walk around the grounds and see the rescued and retired elephants with a very helpful and informative guide. For a little bit extra we purchased baskets of bananas which the elephants were clearly delighted to have! It was fun getting up close to feed them. The best part was hearing the stories of how the elephants were now living out their lives in comfort after being rescued or retired from years of work. I would definitely recommend people visit the sanctuary as soon as travel is allowed, especially as I have read some of them are suffering financially at the moment.

After looking through loads of reviews for a sanctuary where they treat the elephants properly, I can recommend Kanta wholeheartedly! Absolutely superb, picked up from hotel, change into uniforms and hats (elephants need bright colours to see you), fed sugar cane and grass, then made them sticky rice balls and fed them those too. “Nine”, our guide was superb, looked after and educated us all day, with so much information in good English. Lunch was delicious egg fried noodles, with soup and watermelon. Even bathed the elephants at the end. We loved it!

Maewang Elephant Care

et's try your new experiences with the local life up on the mountain in Chiang Mai, Thailand. You will have a chance for jumping in to the Karen hill tribe host family and being a local farmer for a day at "Banthoongluang" a local hill tribe village in Maewang.

Our family loved visiting Maewang Elephant Care. The staff are all incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and seem to enjoy sharing their understanding of the eight wonderful elephants in their care. We fed the elephants, went on a foraging walk with them and then went with them to wash and play in the river. Each of them from Papa Joe (59) to a two year old baby had their own character which the staff helped us get a sense of. Our main guide was a charismatic man whose nickname was Mr Big. He taught us loads about the elephants and really seemed to enjoy sharing our excitement to meet them. The ethics of the place seem superb; no rides, because it hurts the animals' backs, and everything seemed very focused on their welfare. We loved the peace, happiness and positivity of the whole experience.

This group from the Karen tribe takes great care of their elephants and allowed us a good deal of time to enjoy feeding, bathing and massaging the elephants. They also took a ton of photos of our group which we enjoyed having. Rum and his friends were so hospitable and even included water, watermelon and bananas for us to snack on. We had a large group and everyone got plenty of kisses and hugs from our new elephant friends.
