The 10 Best Museums in Santiago, Santiago Metropolitan Region

August 2, 2021 Kandra Bartel

Santiago is one of those metropolitan joys where the more you look, the more you find. Funky cafes and dance clubs dot Bellavista, Forest Park art collections range from pre-Columbian to contemporary, and architecture runs the gamut from the 16th-century San Francisco Church to mirrored office towers. Shop with the locals at Mall Panora¡mico and give your palate meals to remember with hearty Chilean fare.

Casa Museo La Chascona

Tour the eclectic architecture of this home which served as the romantic hideaway for famed poet Pablo Neruda and his wife Matilde, as portrayed in the 1995 film "Il Postino."

This is a fabulous museum paying tribute to the great Nobel Prize poet Pablo Neruda. The museum is literally the house Neruda built and lived in with his wife Matilde Urrutia in Santiago. Please note you are not allowed to take any photographs inside the house. You’re free to take as many photographs outside the house, however. You’re given an audio guide which explains the different parts of the house. This was the most underrated site I visited in Santiago. I would recommend this museum as a must visit for anyone who has even a slight interest in literature. Even those who are not interested in literature will appreciate this museum as a great tribute to one of Chile’s greatest sons.

This is a hidden treasure of Santiago. My partner who was born and raised here had no idea it existed, so it was new experience for both of us, but became a highlight of our trip. Amazing historical building, it's like stepping into royal Europe. The tour is included in the entry price, English tours available, and a real insight into the history of Santiago. The architecture, furniture and antique items are astounding. Highly recommended if you love history. Unfortunately you cannot take photos inside the building.

An ultra modern, beautiful museum with the most fascinating display of Chilean treasures, and not only. The amazing exhibits include pottery, sculpture, jewelry and textiles from the Chilean territory as well as from central America. We followed the free English tour (which was excellent) for about half hour and then we wondered through the floors on our own. Make sure you don’t miss the room with the textiles, which is part of the permanent exhibition. It is a room on the first floor, usually dark with revolving doors in order to preserve the artworks. Truly amazing.

Museo Ralli Santiago

The Ralli Museums are created to showcase Latin American Art through the works of important, contemporary artists. Their origin goes back to Harry Recanati’s frequent trips to South America where he became enchanted with Latin American art due to its quality, mood, and color. With the acquisition of artwork from local artists, he begins his collection which is considered one of the most important collections in the world today. Motivated by a need to share this artistic heritage with the world, he and his wife, Martine, build five museums in the world: Punta del Este, Uruguay in 1988 Santiago, Chile in 1992 Ralli 1. Caesarea, Israel in 1993 Marbella, Spain in 2000 Ralli 2. Caesarea, IsraeI in 2007 Ralli Museum in Santiago opens its doors in 1992 and becomes the second Ralli Foundation museum. Located in the Vitacura area of Santiago, it has beautiful gardens and a large infrastructure with 16 exhibition halls that house an important collection of Latin American and European art.

Amazing in quality and quantity that is. Maybe if you use Uber or GPS you'll find the Ralli easier than I did. Totally worth the time I spent though. From the moment I walked in, I was entranced by the sculpture and paintings- most artists new to me, but as brilliant as any European art superstars. Looks like all 20th century art, in as many styles and genres as there are artists. The museum is quite large by Santiago's standards, and can host substantial temporary exhibitions without cutting into the permanent collection space. Some of the works may be more ... sensual than what's found in more Northern or European collections. Rather than ramble about what I saw though, I suggest a peek at their website, but not so much that you'll spoil any surprise. Admission is free too!

Before going to this museum, I read the reviews. Some where positive and others negative. Our take was that it was a good basic museum and it provided us with excellent information about the regions of Chile. This is a vast country, that basically includes every type of bio region in the world. The dioramas were aged, but not bad. They do have an audio headset in English that describes various dioramas in the museum. We speak and read Spanish at an intermediate level, however, some words were new. The museum also has free wifi, so we were able to look up words we didn’t know. We enjoyed the museum and walking around the park. We felt it was time well spent.
