The 10 Best Museums in Hoi An, Quang Nam Province

July 13, 2021 Stefan Strunk

This city on the central Vietnamese coast is a well-preserved example of the important Southeast Asian trading port it was from the 15th-19th centuries. Already a common stop for backpackers, it is becoming better known to tourists. On the 14th day of each lunar month, the town trades its electric lights for traditional colored lanterns. Sights include the Japanese Covered Bridge and the Quan Cong Temple. Let the town’s expert tailors make you some bespoke clothing.

This is a beautiful shop with art work that is truly unique compared to most of the other typical souvenirs you find in Hoi An. The pop of colour is striking and appealing. The artist captures Vietnam's beauty in a modern way. It is also affordable which is a surprise in the Ancient Town! Thinh, the artist's sister helped us with all of our needs and she was very friendly and enthusiastic however not bombarding. Excellent little find and definitely worth the visit - even if it is just to support local artists.

This is definitely a not-to-be-missed gem in Hoi An. Forget the ethnographic and history museums in Hanoi and Saigon, this is the place to truly learn about the different people who inhabit Vietnam. Réhahn is truly passionate about showcasing and preserving the rich heritage of all the ethnic groups in the country, and he has managed to personally assemble a wonderfully extensive collection of traditional costumes and other artefacts. These are presented better than in any museum we have seen here, with detailed explanations for each and—huge bonus—fantastic portraits of villagers. The gallery is free and has set up a couple of humanitarian projects entirely financed through the sale of the gorgeous photographs and books. Absolutely worthwhile spending an hour or so here, and if you happen to be in luck and visit when Rehahn is actually there himself you are in for an extra treat.

There is so much mass produced nonsense that passes for art in Hoi An that it was great to find a gallery that showcases the work of serious Vietnamese artists and craftspeople. Some lovely stuff here in a variety of media. Great just to browse and enjoy, but we were so impressed by one particular artist that we just had to buy. Prices were very reasonable. Lovely, helpful staff and the owner, Bridget, is an extremely talented artist in her own right. Well worth a visit.

Ly Ly Art Gallery

We had the pleasure of buying a wonderful oil on canvas from Ly Ly Gallery in Hoi An today. Ly Ly opened her gallery up just for us as after we called her to say we were in the area and wanted to check out her inventory. She couldn’t do enough for us in terms of offering ideas, options and packing solution that would make it the 30 hours travel trip back home! Run don’t walk to this gem of a find.

Exquisite - Cultural Gallery

We introduce truly Vietnamese cultures by products. Most products in the Gallery are made by ethnic groups (the M'Nong, H'Re, EDe, Cotu, Cham, Thai, Lao, and more...). And of course, all of them are made in Vietnam.

This shop is an absolute gem of Hoi An. If you want real, authentic souvenirs this is the place to go. Almost everything in the shop is made by tribes and minority groups from all over Vietnam. This shop is a very welcome change from the thousands of souvenir shops selling the same mass produced gifts. The shop owner is a lovely, genuine man who was deeply invested in sharing and preserving the culture of Vietnam. The only downside was, we couldn't take the whole shop home!
