Monument du Centenaire

Reviewed By MaryannF650 - Clarksville, United States

My husband and I were visiting Nice and were fortunate to enjoy a walking tour, as well as, a private sightseeing tour. We spent a lot of time photographing the various famous sights and monuments including the Centennial Monument (Monument du Centenaire). According to available literature, "The monument was commissioned for the centenary celebrations of the Republic in 1892. It was inaugurated on March 4, 1896 and listed as a historic monument on July 23, 2009. "The monument consists of a kind of very tapered pyramid surmounted by a bronze statue representing a victory (Nike in Greek, allusion to the mythical origin of the name Nice) wrapped in a French flag and oath of loyalty, alluding to the city's motto "Nissa fidelissima." At the base of the pyramid, the main group, in white marble, depicts Nice giving itself to France (a young girl kissing a woman holding a beam). France does not wear a Phrygian cap but a helmet and its breast is not bare. Its look is calm, which associates it with the idea of order. It is therefore a moderate, prudent and legalistic Republic, at the same time maternal, reassuring and pacifying. "The city of Nice is covered with its walls, thus taking up an old medieval representation. Four figures, at the corners of the base, should have, according to the original draft, represented the benefits of the annexation, but they were not realized. The city's weapons are carved in the center of the basement. At the back is a representation of the Mediterranean. "The inscriptions are much more numerous than on previous monuments and aim to explain the meaning of the statue as well as to maintain the memory of local elected officials. On the front of the pyramid are the dates 1793-1893 and below: 1860. The purpose of the monument is therefore to commemorate not only the meeting of 1793, but also that of 1860." Very picturesque. Lots of history. Enjoy your visit!
