Incredible View of Lake Biwa From Our Room

Reviewed By Mattsumotosan

Our room was somewhat updated but had a bit of a 1970's vibe. However, the view of Lake Biwa more than made up for it. Restaurant (teppanyaki) was good. The hotel website claims they speak Japanese and English but I was not able to find anyone who spoke even a word of English. Housekeeping staff was below average as our toilet had a mildew stain at the water line, proving that it had not been properly cleaned in weeks. Very large pool area. The bed was "extremely firm" (I'm being nice) which did not provide a good nights sleep. Lots to see and do there (in Otsu). I recommend visiting the Lake Biwa Museum if you're ever in this area.

A superb hotel overlooking the largest lake in Japan

There is a courtesy bus from JR Otsu station so is convenient even if not driving. The staff all speak English and are more than willing to help you. The rooms are spacious especially the suites. The views are spectacular and you feel like you are flying looking out the large windows in each room. The swimming pool is well maintained with changing rooms and showers fully equipped with soap, shampoo and hair dryers. The breakfast buffet is excellent and being on the 37th. floor the views of the lake are wonderful. Otsu is also only 10 minutes by train to Kyoto JR station so very convenient for sightseeing in Kyoto city too.

Poor experience

Reviewed By YukamiK1

When we arrived in the evening, we went swimming in Lake Biwa. There were life jackets at the back of the hotel, and since there were no rules regarding their use, and they were not protected by nets, we used them. When I went to return them the next day, the guy who runs the SUP school said to me, "You used our life jackets, didn't you? When I asked him if I could use it freely, he replied, "You're not allowed to use it. The way he said it made me feel uncomfortable because he blamed me as if I was a thief. After that, when I went to the hotel to tell them that if we were not allowed to use it, they should post a sign or protect it with a net, they told me to tell the vendor directly because SUP is run differently, and the SUP operator looked a little scary, so I told the hotel staff, but they didn't understand. In the end, I was told to go directly to the vendor. In the end, the hotel staff said, "I'll let the vendor know," but there was no word about the fact that they were making it difficult for us to understand how to use the SUP activity, which made me sad. I wish they would have said something when we checked in. The cleaning staff and BBQ preparers were very nice, so I was disappointed with the front desk and the vendors who came and went. There were other small details that bothered me, and I felt that the hospitality part of the place was not good.

A Quiet Place

Reviewed By sanwajourneys

I like staying at this hotel because it was very quiet and very near to the train station. I also can get meal easily there. The room was also using a carpet. But maybe because this is an old hotel so the interior was also old and not perfectly clean (it doesn't mean that it was not clean). As for breakfast I can not give any comment because I didn't taste it due to I left very early in the morning to catch my morning flight and only stayed for one night that day.

Thanks for the stay

Reviewed By 367sandcastle

I took my elementary school-aged son to Lake Biwa for the first time to celebrate the summer holidays and swim in the lake. Due to the distance from our home, I thought it would be better to stay overnight instead of rushing back. Using an employee rate, I actually received a kind upgrade to a room with an onsen because my son would not be able to use the public hot spring on his own, which would have upset him a lot as he loves all things related to water. Thanks to this kind upgrade by Abeyama Manager, my son took a bath at his leisure 4 times in less than 18 hours. I don't usually eat at hotels due to the cost, so we walked to the neighbouring mall. It actually has two large food courts at either end of the mall and a supermarket. If you aren't fussed about dining in a restaurant it's good enough. I'm sure guests without kids might not find this too appealing. Although I had to pay to use the pool, they only charged us for one entrant because only my son was intending to swim and I was just going to supervise. While waiting for the shuttle bus back to the station, Mr. Abeyama kindly provided us with drinks for the road a massive handfuls of Haribo gummi bears. :) Since this was just meant to be a place to hang our heads for a short time, the wonderful view of the lake and our private bath really made this great for us. Also, we didn't want to get out of bed it was so cozy. Thank you for the hospitality. <3
