A true gem in the Midlands

Reviewed By SadieKS

We will definitely be back! The good: Amazing views Cute cottages Clean Quiet Relaxing Trails The sound of the running river below. The rusks, milk, coffee and tea freely available There is a TV with dstv, a wood fireplace, a weber braai, and an umbrella on the deck; Excellent hosts and hospitality Improvements: Fans and spray would help with the bugs and many flies (we were in the Chelsea unit), they seemed to be attracted to the chandeliers and decor in the lounge & bedroom; A warning when booking about the state of the road leading to the units when it rains would be appreciated. Driving through thick mud in a normal car is quite stressful, even from Notties side. Thanks to Stanley for his great attitude and hospitality.

Best Self Catering in the Midlands

STONE COTTAGE We visit the Midlands often and this is by far the best self-catering place we have ever stayed. It is in a great location; the cottage is beautiful and homely and has everything anyone would ever need when staying at a self-catering cottage. The fire was already roaring in the fireplace when we arrived and the next day when we got back after meandering, it was also lit, and the cottage was warm. The beds were very comfortable and have electric blankets. The attention to detail in the cottage and on the whole property is the best I have ever come across. The outside patio/braai area of Stone Cottage is so lovely, I will have to go back in the summer so we can use it properly. Jo and her staff were a pleasure to deal with. It really makes ones stay that much more enjoyable. We will definitely be back.

Weather was warm and sunny, and we enjoyed walking around the grounds. Typical pub grub and well presented and is tasty. We will definitely return

Some good points but maintenance needs to be improved.

Reviewed By Gavin H

Fordoun Spa and Hotel has some good points, such as room service and very comfortable accommodation. However, the general upkeep and maintenance of the place could do with an upgrade. The brickwork on the estate's roads is seriously below par and anybody slightly infirm will need to negotiate broken and misplaced bricks on the roads very carefully. However, the worst feature was an unilluminated trench (about 15cm deep and dirt) below some steps on the way to a particular unit, which caused me to sprain an ankle at night. I did email reception about this but never received a reply. I am now posting this to ensure that this trench is filled in and surfaced, and that it is illuminated at night, so that no one else suffers a sprained ankle as I did.
