Coming from America where we are presently struggling with the subject of immigration this was an enlightening museum. There is definitely room for growth and adding additional information regarding Australian history I believe they are off to a wonderful start. On Main Street there are working shops, hotels and a theatre – all based on original Ballarat businesses. Visitors are able to watch goldfields tradespeople in action and take a ride around the township in a horse-drawn coach. For the brave hearted, journey underground on a gold mine tour.

We arrived on speculation, without any bookings and were surprised to find we could commence a tour, after a tasty lunch. The staff could not have been more helpful, particularly Kipp, a young personable student on a vacation job, who was knowledgeable and friendly. The museum, included in the tour price, was small but interesting and the shop was well stocked. The guided tour was comprehensive and took in all areas behind scenes and the added extra was that bikes were racing round as part of a private hire day. Perfect day not to be missed.

This moving memorial is a timely reminder that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. This museum is filled with heart-wrenching exhibits which drive home the tragedy of the attempted annihilation of an entire race of people. Hearing actual life experiences from living survivors of death camps is unforgettable. Meeting them was an honour.
