We got the English audio guide at the entry – this was a really good museum. Some of the displays were really immersive and of course the big panorama up the top. Must-see when in Volgograd, I really enjoyed it. The exhibits were great and I learnt a lot about the town's history in the Battle of Stalingrad.

We invite all those whose childhood was spent in the yard, one mother shouted back from the window; those who drank soda of faceted glass; ate the most delicious ice cream; those who took in the young Octobrists, the pioneers, who collected waste paper, went to "potato". We were overwhelmed by the treasures we saw and were surprised that such an amazing collection survived Russia’s turbulent history. Hundreds of objects made of gold and silver were encrusted with gems. The gold carriages were unbelievable. The collection of crowns was my favourite. So many display cases were filled with items that showed the wealth and lavish lifestyle of the Tsars. There were displays of clothes worn by the royal family, some famous Faberge eggs and many other items. Everything was beautifully styled. There were military uniforms, weapons and horse armoury that were all heavily decorated. There was also a number of religious items. This museum shows the connection between the wealth and power of the Tzar, the church and the state. No wonder there was a revolution in Russia.

The Catherine Palace is named after Catherine I, the wife of Peter the Great. Originally a modest two-storey building commissioned by Peter for Catherine in 1717, the Catherine Palace owes its awesome grandeur to their daughter, Empress Elizabeth, who chose Tsarskoye Selo as her chief summer residence. Starting in 1743, the building was reconstructed by four different architects. The building was to be built to compete with Versailles. The resultant palace, completed in 1756, is nearly 1km in circumference, with elaborately decorated blue-and-white facades featuring gilded atlantes. The interiors of the Catherine Palace are no less spectacular. Another place worth seeing. A beautiful palace and park complex.

The ancient Tula Kremlin (built in the 16th century) with its walls and towers of red brick is in a very good condition. Inside the Kremlin there is a spacios green area with the lawns, walkways, lanterns and benches, a beautiful renovated orthodox Cathedral ( the 18th century, barocco style), the Exhibition Centre, the State Museum of Weapon (the old building) and an arcade of gift shops offering handicraft, souvenirs and sweets. If you are lucky you may visit an open air concert there. A very pleasant place to learn history, to walk and just to have a rest, ancient and modern at the same time. Free of charge (except the Museum of Weapon). The Museum of the Russian Samovar is just a few steps from the Kremlin.
