Plaza de Bolivar de Bogota

Famous square marking a historic turning point in Colombia's colonial past.

Reviewed By schnaklefarg - Denver, United States

A thriving plaza in the heart of Bogotá’s historic government district. The square is bordered by the senior cathedral in Colombia (Cathedral Primada) and archbishop’s palace, the Capitol building, the Alcalda (mayor and city government), and the Supreme Court of Colombia. A statue of the libertador of Gran Colombia, Simon Bolivar, occupies the space and the center of the plaza. On the holiday I was there, the square was populated with a lively crowd of solos, young couples, families with children, and elderly Bogotueños enjoying the sunny afternoon. The cathedral is open to view except during services. Perhaps best of all, the plaza is immediately adjacent to Bogotá’s historic, picturesque Candelaria neighborhood, with its many shops, cafes, and restaurants.
