The 10 Best Hiking Trails in Maui, Hawaii (HI)

July 12, 2021 Dorsey Hagwood

The Hawaiian island of Maui is a destination for true nature lovers. The ethereal bamboo forest and churning waterfalls in Haleakala National Park can be explored via the Waimoku Falls Trail. Stretch out on warm, golden sands or hit the surf for an unforgettable windsurfing or snorkeling session. Driving the scenic road to Hana along the island’s northeastern shore will be among the most spectacular journeys of your life. Time stands still at the Hawaiian village of Keanae, definitely worth a visit.

Sliding Sands Trail

Walking down here is eerie to me. First of all you're at 10000 feet so if you use the rule of thumb 1 hour down 2 hours up it is more like 3 because of the altitude unless you live in higher elevations. Make sure you have good shoes and warm clothes and a last worning don't go in the rain. The landscape is moonlike and pretty barren. We didn't do the entire trek but did enough to know a little of what to expect. We had clear weather but it was cold. Definitely huffed and puffed on the way back up.

King's Highway

This intermediate to advanced scenic hiking trail was built over a lava flow that occurred in the late 1700s, making the trek somewhat rugged in certain sections.

This was a great hike. About 2/3 of a mile follows the coast & there are many amazing views. Once the lava trail starts you will need very solid footer wear. We were glad we had hiking boots. Bring plenty of water... There is no shade & it is very hot crossing the lava field. We didn't go all the way to the beach but we saw amazing views & some feral black goats. We were happy to dip into Ahihi Bay for some snorkeling when the hike was done.

Waihee Ridge Trail

Reviewed By Longbow1av8r - Durango, United States

This can be a FREE, fun, but slightly challenging 5-mile hike with some fairly steep sections for couples or families with older children. Beautiful views reward your efforts if you go there on clear days when the mountains are not covered with clouds. Early mornings seem to be best before the clouds move in. You definitely want hiking boots or running shoes at a minimum, especially if it has been wet and rainy as some sections of the trail can get quite muddy and slippery after rains. DON'T go here with beach flip-flops! The scenery changes along the hike from close rain-forest-shaded paths to wide-open mountain valley vistas. At least one member in your party should have a backpack to carry water bottles for everyone. Older couples in good shape can enjoy this hike, but should probably allow more time.

Kapalua Coastal Trail

A two-mile walk along Maui's northwest coast, the trail begins and ends on a beach. In between, you'll see spactacular oceanfront and bountiful greenery on the dramatic coastline.

My family and I were on vacation in Maui (in the Lahaina area) and were looking for a spot to take our girls (5 & 7) out for an easy hike/walk where we could also take in some of the natural beauty of the coastline. The Kapalua Coastal Trail was exactly what we were looking for. It's a mostly flat walking trail that offers views of the beach, rock formations, flowers, plants and birds. There is beach access and a spot to go cliff diving. It takes 1.5-2 hours to explore the entire trial if you take your time and take it all in. Parking is free.

We took the trail to get to the water holes down by the beach, we passed the lighthouse, down to water falls and searched for the heart rock ( which is smaller and is now broken). Great views! and awesome banana bread and drinks at the beginning of trail by nice guy in white van at the start of the trail.

Ohai Loop Trail and Overlook

Reviewed By rdubbs08 - Edmond, United States

We watched the sunrise at the Nakalele blowhole just down the road and then proceeded to do this trail. It is a relatively easy 1.2 mile loop all along the coast for the most part. Our 5 year old was able to do most of it and we carried our 21 month old in a carrier. A very nice morning walk and fantastic coastal views!
