We stopped in Rennes on our way to Mont St-Michel. We're so glad we did. Not only did we find this compact town walkable and friendly, but we were pleased to discover its wonderful garden. It was worthy of a couple of hours, even on a brisk, showery day. Set in the site of an old quarry, it rich with water features amid old-growth plantings, with woodsy paths connecting the lower levels to the more formal gardens above. Though it was late in the season, the formal, flowering gardens were still rich with colorful blooms. In the middle of the park, we came upon the lovely aviary and its contributions of amazing colors. Parc du Thabor is a garden worth detouring to visit.

Stayed here 4 nights on an independent tour of the area. We wanted to see how the real people of France lived and I think we got a good glimpse of it staying in a little 1 bedroom apartment in the old town just 150 metres from the railway station. Bought our groceries from the local supermarket and roamed for hours. Great architecture from middle ages up late 1800's and also quite different as you get closer to the coast and see the influence of the British style architecture. Hundreds of little cafes and restaurants and buildings of interest, from the Opera house to cathedrals and council buildings. Good to just wander, sit and take in the atmosphere. Take a train to St Marlo or hire a car for the day and see more of the coast. Visit the Abbey of Mont St Michelle on day trip. A great experience for the independent traveler and so much to keep you occupied.

One of the great outdoor markets. If you are there on a Saturday it is a must. Plan to buy your picnic. It is almost entirely locals buying their fresh foods for the week, but the vendors were welcoming to tourists and quick to use their English if needed. The cheese stalls are fantastic as are the charcuterie stalls. It is also a good place to buy cuisine souvenirs like special spices or fois gras.
