The 10 Best Free Things to do in Kochi (Cochin), Kerala

June 2, 2021 Concepcion Newsome

A blending of several small villages on the southwestern coast created the current incarnation of Kochi (or Cochin), where sunset strolls, sampling fresh fish from seaside vendors and boat rides through the islands just offshore top visitors' to-do lists. Art centers showcase the traditional dance, Kathakali. European influences are seen in the 16th-century Portuguese-built churches and forts, while the mark of early Chinese traders is visible in the unusual fishing nets dotting the shoreline.

David Hall Gallery & Cafe

David Hall is a beautiful old Dutch bungalow that has been restored and has taken on a new life as a cultural centre with a gallery for contemporary art, with a focus on providing a platform for young artists. With its café serving authentic thin crust pizzas, delicious bites and beverages; and a space for performing arts, the historic building could be an inspiring, vibrant meeting place for fresh talent and lovers of art.

If you're in Fort Kochi for the Biennale, then David Hall is one place you should not miss. It is one of the exhibit venues for the biennale and a very beautiful one indeed. I visited David Hall for the biennale, but ended up falling in love with their cafe and spending more time that I had planned on staying. They have a beautiful outdoor cafe, with a vertical garden and greenery all around. There is a changing special menu that is displayed on the board and the pizzas here are an absolute must try item.

LuLu Mall

Pics were not permitted but I did click some from outside. Undoubtedly world class hyper market with choicest of freshly made mouthwatering multiple cusine delicacies sold as take away (except chat and fruit juice)... people thronging and fighting to get Arabian, Kerala, Tandoori, Chinese, Continental food and array of breads with ultra fresh salads n cheese...yet no dearth of piping hot supply from the hyper market kitchen! Priced cheapest in the world and quality best in category. The fish, meat, vegetables, fruits (dry fruits too best of world products) were topmost in quality and freshness personified! Priced cheapest ofcourse. The deals in all veriety of groceries, cosmetics, diary, pickles etc and home needs seemed irresistibly good. Staff over worked and cash counters overflowing but somehow there seemed order and efficiency in all that crowd and chaos. MUST VISIT in cochin and Mall itself is a sure shot full day of fun, food and time well spent on value shopping at competitive rates. Food Court is fantastic and needs another exclusive review.

Vypeen Island

Reviewed By EkMusafir - Pune, India

Vypeen or Vypin Island is one of the group of islands which form the city of Kochi and Ernakulam. It is just north of Fort Kochi and easily accessed by ferry or road. It is an elongated island, about 27 km long and less than 2 km wide at its widest. It is connected to mainland Kochi by a series of bridges known as the Goshree Bridge which is about 3 km long and touches two other islands. Another way to reach the south end of Vypin Island is by a ferry. There are ferries from Fort Kochi, Bolghatty Island and Ernakulam on the mainland. All the ferries offer scenic rides on the Vembanad Lake backwaters. We crossed over on the Vypin-Fort Kochi ‘Jankar’ ferry with our car, and the crossing took barely 10 minutes, although we had to wait for about 15 minutes to board it. The drive along Vypin Island is very scenic, although it is supposed to be one of the most densely populated islands in the world. One the western side is the Arabian Sea, and on the east is the scenic backwater. Both sides are lined with pretty palm trees. There is a lighthouse and some pristine beaches lining the seaside, Cherai Beach and Kuzhupilly Beach being the most popular. There are many seaside resorts and restaurants as well on the beach front. It is worth taking a ferry trip to Vypin Island if you are visiting Kochi or Ernakulam for sight-seeing.

Kuzhupilly beach, located in Vypeen or Vypin, this white, sandy beach is ideal for swimming. The backwaters nearby are an added charm, as are the paddy fields and coconut groves on the way to the beach, where kite festivals are occasionally held.
