The 10 Best Free Things to do in Jackson Hole, Jackson Hole

June 28, 2021 Roger Rusk

During the winter, Jackson Hole is a wonderland of snow skiing, snowmobiling and ice-skating. Summer in Jackson Hole is all about hiking, whitewater rafting, golfing and horseback riding. When you come down off the slopes, you can choose from recreation options like dog sled tours, sleigh rides and wildlife and nature tours. During the summer, you better get your energy level up because kayaking, hang gliding, hot air ballooning, mountain biking and stagecoach rides are just a few of the many options available. For climbers, hikers and nature lovers, the nearby Grand Teton National Park is an absolute nirvana. The towering mountains of the Teton Range stretch 40 miles, and include eight mountains over 12,000 feet. Keep in mind, too, that Yellowstone National Park’s South Entrance is only 90 minutes away, and another 45 minutes or so to reach Old Faithful. If you’re looking for some serious, fast-paced family fun in Jackson Hole, try the Alpine Slide, where you slide down 2,500 feet of Snow King Mountain in a bobsled. For a calmer experience, enjoy the Bridger Gondola, which takes tram riders from the Teton Village to heights of 10,000 feet. Golf enthusiasts have access to some great golf with tee opportunities at Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design and Teton Pines Resort Golf Course, designed by Arnold Palmer.

Laurance Rockefeller Preserve

Reviewed By cscushman - Houston, United States

This is a great hike for the whole family. You can do a short hike to Phelps Lake or a much longer hike around the whole lake. Put lunch in your backpack and head off through a beautiful wooded trail along parts of a trickling stream. Make sure you take bear spray with you. I have seen bears on more than one occasion. After your hike, stop in at their visitor’s center to learn more about the Rockefeller family and their generous donation of land for our Park’s system. Make sure to save time to watch the all seasons slide show showing the park and it’s animals in all four seasons. Then step back into the zen like room where you can sit and listen to all the sounds of the many wonders of GTNP. They only allow so many cars to park in their lot. Get their early or take a book and wait in line, in your car, for the next parking place.

Nothing can beat an experience at MADE (except perhaps a few minutes across the boardwalk in Mursells, an incredible independent sweet shop or candy store). I go to MADE for new ideas, great gifts, personal treats, funny cards, superb puzzles and beautiful jewelry. You can always find something. An absolute must in Jackson Hole. Then when you have done, go to Mursells and buy some treat from the past or the UK or Australia or other places. Crunchies, Aero's, Jelly Babies, YUM

Images of Nature by Thomas Mangelsen

Reviewed By CharlesC722 - Dawsonville, United States

Ever time I come to Jackson I make three or four visits to this fabulous Gallery. If you love wildlife this is a must see exhibit of Tom Mangelsen one of the top photographers in the world. You will be amazed at unbelievable scenes he has captured that seem almost surreal. Quite simply he seems to always be at the right place at the right time. Over the past six months I have purchased three o his selections and I proudly display them in my study . I particularly urge families with children to stop by because a visit is even better than going to a zoo! You will certain be in awe of what you experience!

Knit on Pearl

Although I haven't been to Knit on Pearl in person, I ordered online from them because they had some yarn that I couldn't get nearby. My email inquiry was answered very promptly by Margaret, who had me call the store to place my order. The staff was so friendly, and I was really happy with the great customer service. Delivery was quick, and my yarn was well packaged and came with a business card that had spaces where I could list all my needles and their sizes. This was an exceptionally wonderful transaction, and if I'm ever anywhere near Jackson, I'm for sure going to visit this wonderful yarn shop.

We recently were given a wonderful, informative tour (with samples!) at the JHSW and LOVED it. Travis and Chas took so much time to explain their history and the process of making their superb gin and vodka. We are looking forward to being able to buy these delicious liquors in NC. The Highwater Vodka was competitive with my personal favorite, Reyka (from Iceland), and their Great Grey Gin is fascinating and I would choose it over my current love, Plymouth (from England), given the chance. Give them a try!
