HMAS Sydney II Memorial

Reviewed By Q7840EUdanl - Bunbury, Australia

Magnificent and symbolic memorial to the 645 crew members of HMAS Sydney II who are still on patrol. The memorial is among the best war memorial that we have seen anywhere we have visited over the years with the Wall of Remembrance, the Sanctuary, the Stele, the Pool of Remembrance and, perhaps the most poignant, the Waiting Woman Sculpture looking eternally to the sea for the return of her sailor. There were a lot of visitors, both young and adult, yet there was silence as if everybody recognised that they stood in a special place.

OMG - the ladies at this place were fantastic. We rolled into town after a very long journey exhausted and not really sure what Geraldton had to offer. In a matter of minutes, they were super helpful, had a fully inspired and even assisted us with booking tours so we didn't miss out. We quite fairly spent up big in their souvenirs section after this and what a fabulous time we had whlst staying in Geraldton... most of which I am sure we would not have experienced had we not stopped in to say hi and check this out.

This is our 3rd visit to Geraldton in the last 5 years and we never fail to stop by at the cathedral. This time it was just an overnight in Geraldton on our road trip to Coral Bay. Next time we have to timed it with a tour to fully appreciate the history. However, thanks to the Museum in a nearby building which we visited for the first time, I learnt a lot on the life of the talented Architect/Priest Monsignor Hawes.
