The 10 Best Free Things to do in Evansville, Indiana (IN)

May 9, 2022 Roger Rusk

Situated on a gentle bend of the Ohio River at the hub between Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky, Evansville is a sizable metropolis with small town friendliness. There is something for everyone to discover, whether it is a chance encounter with Lady Luck on the riverboat Casino Aztar, a brisk hike along the Riverfront promenade, a step into history at Angel Mounds State Historic Site, fun with the family at Kid's Kingdom or an escape to verdant Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage.

Wesselman Woods Nature Center

Reviewed By AdrianBambini

My spouse and I visited Wesselman on a sunny afternoon during the COVID crisis. We live in KY. As a botanist, Ii was vey interested to see what was available there. The Nature Center Building was closed but the walking trails were open. The old growth trees were stunning. Much of the pathways are slightly raised wooden platforms with some dating back to the 1980s. Although it had not rained for a day or so, some of these wooden platform were slightly slippery. I thought the small native plants garden right inside the main entrance was especially nice. There must have been 30 different plant species on display. I would suggest that they add more plant labels so that the visitors can more easily identify and learn what is there. There are a lot of nice signage along the trails and some are showing their age. I look forward to returning to Wesselman very soon to walk the remaining trails. I saw some super-sized mayapples, sessile trilliums and bent triiliums. With the late freeze we just had, I am wondering if any of the paw paws will bear fruit this year.

Carson's Brewery

Reviewed By apriles982 - Evansville, United States

Hi Mike and Aprile here! We love our local business, Carson's Brewery... great place to sample a couple of craft and guest brew flights (Mike really likes the Brown Cow and Harlot, Aprile also likes the fruit beers), kick back with family and friends on the weekend while listening to the tunes of live music entertainment for the evening (7-10 pm). They have had some really good music events on the weekend to enjoy, either sitting out by the fire (our favorite place to kick back under the stars when there) or inside the taproom! Enjoyed the music entertainment by CurtNRod, Hudsy, Smith and Rome, and Dueling Guitars just to name a few. Staff are always very friendly and welcoming. The brewery is pet friendly... our little Mia the yorkipoo is a great fan of Carson's! We typically pick up a Stromboli and chips from our favorite little Twisted Tomato on the way to enjoy at Carson's and bring a few bar snacks with us (Chex mix, mixed nuts, pretzels) to munch on during the evening. Would highly recommend you give this little gem in Evansville a try! You too will become a regular at Carson's.

The Eastland Mall

Reviewed By Rfamily0516

This mall was a gem to our family, as it offered something for everyone. My children loved riding the carousel and we played a round of putt putt golf in the goofy golf venue in the mall. The food court offers a variety of foods, including a chick-Fil-a. There are also a wide variety of stores here, including non-clothing stores, which my husband is always happy for. Parking and getting in and out of the lot was relatively easy, even on a busy November Saturday. We look forward to coming back and shopping soon!

Tropicana Evansville Casino

Reviewed By 671perlan - Fort Wayne, United States

Husband and I decided to stop at this casino. So beautiful and a fantastic location. It sits by the Ohio River. Evansville has done a fantastic job on that Riverwalk that looks amazing from the upper floors. When we got there, there were lots of people and did some waiting but after a while it went well. Played for about 4 hours and it was time to leave. We still needed 2 hours to go to get to our destination.......the next casino in Metropolis Illinois. Anyways the Tropicana Casino in Evansville was the 1st casino in the state of Indiana under a different name though and my understanding is this casino use to be on a River boat many years ago.
