You have to drive through a neighborhood that turns into a farm to get to River Hill, but it is well worth tracking down. It is a pretty small operation as distilleries go, but the owners are really down to earth and enthusiastic. Pop is happy to give a tour of the unassuming place: there is the tap room, and the small room behind it is the distillery. "This is my vat, those over there are my barrels." The bourbon and corn whiskey he makes are all worth picking up. If they aren't the best you've had, you will appreciate the taste of down home honesty. My wife was happy to chat with Mom and sample the fruity wines they sell (yes, including Sweet Potato.) I find those type of wines good for desserts or pancakes, but my wife likes the occasional spritzer. They were out of one that my wife selected, but she got a kick out of watching Pop decant her bottle directly from a barrel, and he let her label it and put the seal over the cork. The property itself is pretty large, and they do a number of other things aside from the distillery. You can buy meat at the counter with your wine, and they also board horses and I understand they have a shooting range. This is a place you want to visit just so you can recognize it when some author inevitably includes it as a setting in a novel.

Deschutes Brewery Tasting Room

This tasting room is a preview of the brewing facility that Deschutes is going to build in Botetourt County and is an awesome way to develop a following for their beer before they open that facility. Small, but very modern, space with several bar top tables and window seats. There are only a couple regular tables, so you might have to get lucky if you're looking for one of those. There are a couple outdoor bar tops as well. The beer is great and I highly recommend a flight so that you can taste several different ones unless you already have a favorite from this brewery that you like to stick to. Several good I.P.A. options, as well as, some good darker beers also. There is a style to suit every taste though. The staff is friendly and very efficient even when the place is crowded. If you're exploring downtown, I'd definitely suggest stopping in here. No food served here other than meat and cheese plates, but you can bring your own in.

The Friendly Fermenter

This seems like you're walking into someone's basement home brew room. And it is in many ways. It looks like it's home brew shop that sells its 'home brew' on tap and you can buy your equipment and ingredients here. My wife, who loves IPA's, went with the Ruin Jason double IPA. Any double or triple IPA is a true test of a Brewmeister. And this one passed with flying colors - as the added hops were there to add character not just mo' bitter. I had a Big Toby - an Imperial Red. It could have used a little more oomph, but was a delightful sipper. BTW, you can get a 4 OZ glass, which was what we both had after a huge lunch with a drive home awaiting us. Plus - you can get your Shenandoah Beerwerks Passport stamped! It's small with tough parking nearby, but if circle a few times you'll find something. But - this is true anywhere in downtown H'burg.

What a GLORIOUSLY relaxing & enjoyable visit my friends & I had at Glen Manor Vineyards yesterday! Three of us had driven up from Fredericksburg, VA, meeting up with a friend who lives locally & who had highly recommended this winery. And was he ever right! He'd made reservations for us all, so we could enjoy a leisurely afternoon sampling delicious red & white flights, sharing a favorite bottle, spreading out our picnic lunch, & safely visiting w/ one another while taking in wide open views of the gorgeous vineyards, Blue Ridge Mountains, & Skyline Drive high above. Unlike many wineries that crowd in as many people as they are able, Glen Manor presently is open by reservation only, providing first rate customer service, & taking superior (yet not at all onerous) precautions to ensure everyone's safety - from their initial greeting & tableside service to their restroom policy, to final purchases, payment, & good-byes-til-next-time! First rate customer service experience, exceptional environment, delicious wines ... What a MARVELOUS DAY we all had! THANK YOU, GLEN MANOR!

We visited Barren Ridge Vineyard as a member of Harvest Host in our 39 ft RV for an overnight stay. We were greeted by the owners Angela and Rob who gave us a history of the property and their vineyard and wines, We were treated to a front row table overlooking the beautiful vineyard and surrounding mountains. We shared a bottle of Cabernet with a cheese plate and bought bottles of their Riesling to take home, I highly recommend stopping here for the Great Wine and Beautiful scenery. The owners are great hosts and you will not be disappointed.

We love going to the Farmers Market and it's open all year long on Saturdays and open on Tuesdays also during the growing season. We particularly like the Staff of Life, a bakery that makes the most outstanding breads, rolls, breadsticks and other baked goods that I've ever tasted. We get all of our breads there. There are also several Mennonite farmers with fresh produce, jams, grapes and nuts and much more. The variety is pretty good too from handmade oak, maple and other wood goods and furniture, kettle corn, wine distributors, fresh pork, beef and other meats and much more. On Saturdays during the warm months there is usually vocal group or small musical group on the grass playing great songs.

Great local Virginia vineyard with good wines and very good countryside view. Enjoyed most of the wines we tried in our tasting. Also loved the hot mulled wine (available this December), one of the best mulled wines we've had and great if you visit in the winter!
