The 10 Best Food & Drink in Bay of Plenty Region, North Island

June 4, 2021 Fernanda Pittenger

The Bay of Plenty (Māori: Te Moana-a-Toi) is a large bight in the northern coast of New Zealand's North Island. It stretches from the Coromandel Peninsula in the west to Cape Runaway in the east, a wide stretch of some 259 km of open coastline. The Bay of Plenty Region is situated around this body of water, also incorporating several large islands in the bay. The bay was named by James Cook after he noticed the abundant food supplies at several Māori villages there, in stark contrast to the earlier observations he had made in Poverty Bay.

Tauranga Tasting Tours

We are a small transport company that specialises in food & wine venues. However, we can be chartered to go to venues that are not food/liquor related e.g. Shows, sports events etc. During the cruise-ship season, we travel to Rotorua's thermal delights & the Waitomo Caves. We are frequently chartered for special occasions, such as birthdays, anniversaries, Hens’ Parties etc., so that people can fit the celebration to their venue type /budget, date & number constraints. Our tours are door-to-door from within the Tauranga/Mt Maunganui/early Papamoa area. We travel out of town to Sunday Lunches approximately once a month, and provide mid-week tours. We often visit gardens & garden festivals. Our Local Tasting Tour is our most popular tour. It visits Karangahake Winery (wine presentation & shared platters)The Wine Portfolio for a wine presentation & tasting (Leveret & Mills Reef wines). We then return to Tauranga's CBD for a cocktail & dessert at Takara Restaurant.

Volcanic Hills Winery

Rotorua has a unique wine experience in its tourism repertoire with Volcanic Hills Winery. The winery where we make the wine is at the base of Skyline Rotorua, however you will need to take the Skyline Gondola up to the Volcanic Hills Tasting Room. Currently only open Friday and Saturdays from 12pm to 6pm and Sundays from noon until 5pm. Do arrive at the gondola terminal an hour before closing to ensure you have time to enjoy the Gondola ride and your tasting before we close. Come up and drink the view overlooking Lake Rotorua. Please note we are closed Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday each year. We open at 1pm on 25th April each year.

What an amazing experience with friends! We noticed the spectacular view at Volcanic Hills Winery while browsing at the gift shop and could not resist the lure of an unplanned wine tasting. Great selection of wines and between Brent, Johnny and Georgia we were well taken care of. We were entertained by an unexpected tiki tour of New Zealand's best vine growing spots and funny facts about kiwi culture in general. Highly recommend the Tawny Port. Perfect place to spend an afternoon with friends and I can guarantee we will be back.

Lovely little set up and good views. The staff were friendly and food and drinks were delivered in a timely manner. I would 100% recommend this place! I tried 4 things on the menu and all of them were delicious, one of the best meals I’ve had in ages. The cider paddle went down well with the table as you can see what cider you prefer. All four i tried were super yummy!

What is the big deal about a local farmers market. Usually not much. This one though was a worthwhile adventure. Could not believe the extent of wares, foods and such available. Walked away with creamy cheeses, raw milk and great veggies. Scored day old strawberries (two quarts worth) for half price, which happened to be right out of the garden. There is something for everyone here. People were leaving with full bags of goodies.
