The 10 Best Flea & Street Markets in Yucatan Peninsula, Yucatan Peninsula

March 15, 2022 Rebbecca Marino

Hidden gems of Yucatan, such as Tulum, Akumal, Chetumal, Chichen Itza and Merida, offer an authentic taste of Mexico. Akumal and more Caribbean-style Chetumal, near the Belize border, deliver delectable white-sand beaches and great snorkelling. Merida, Chichen Itza and Tulum, with their ancient ruins, offer a passage into the Yucatanâs native history. Nature lovers can jungle trek and swim in subterranean sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water. Bike around the ruins and hop between towns in colectivo vans.

Noche Mexicana

I went to Noche Mexicana alone as I was solo traveling in Merida, and had a blast. Take an uber to Remate de Pasaje Montejo. I arrive just at 8pm on a Saturday in June and there were already ancianos performing a traditional Mexican folkloric dance. The seats weren't quite full but as the night wore on more and more people filled the seats. I highly recommend trying the marquesitas from the street vendors (this is a traditional crepe-like desert, served with queso or nutella or combinado if you want both. You shouldn't pay more than 30 pesos for 1 combinado.) I also bought magnets and an infant dress for my younger cousin from the vendors. For pricier items, haggling is acceptable. I speak Spanish, so if you speak English expect gringo prices from some of the vendors that don't have items labeled. I recommend going to vendors where prices are labeled to get the best price if you don't speak Spanish -- because they cannot inflate the price for you.

The park itself is lovely and a diverse slice of this vibrant community. The market is fabulous, offering veggies, fruits, nuts, fresh flowers and meat. The vendors were always so kind, handing you a basket while you select your bounty. There are also some non food vendors as well (and honey products for skin care). And if you want authentic food from the region, one of the many food stands can help you out!

Mercado 23

We went on a Sunday and only saw three other gringos in the 2+ hours we spent wandering around. This is very much a local market. The souvenir vendors are a bit pushy, but not aggressive, especially if you say “just looking”. They understand that in English, but most don’t speak much more than that. A few enjoy practicing their English with you and are patient if your Spanish isn’t great. We ate amazing street tacos at a little stand full of locals right off the market. 4 tacos and a large glass bottle of Fanta for $4US. Amazing food! Also enjoyed shaved ice with fruit juice. Everyone was so friendly and nice! Loved this market!

Great place to pick up souvenirs. Checked out all the little shops. Bought a coconut carved into a humming bird. Asked if shop owner made it and he got excited and took us out back to see his work shed. Lots of raw coconuts and some tools. He took pride in his work.

Lucas de Galvez market

Wonderfully crazy!! This place just blew me away. We didn’t even see one tenth of this market. It was super busy on a weekday morning when we visited. The aisles were quite narrow with lots of people weaving in and out around the stalls. All of the vendors I encountered were super nice and helpful. I enjoyed practicing my Spanish with them. I could tell they appreciated that I at least tried. The prices were excellent for what I bought......several bags, a pair of handmade leather sandals (so cute), a beautiful 3/4 length sleeve top, and two large scarves. We had a great lunch of panuchos, tacos pastor, 2 bowls of sopa de lima, and two cokes for 111 pesos. I just loved this crazy crazy place. I’m going back without my husband this fall and will definitely try to cover more ground. It is a must see and do activity when visiting Merida.
