If you are the first time to Yogya, this is recommended, surround by hotels, shops, batik shops, local foods, international foods, mc.donalds, starbucks etc to gudeg, soto, fried rice until hidden gems like delicious pork satay. Malioboro is the way to Kraton (Yogyakarta Palace) so this is important road and you may walk from train station to Kraton. Dont forget to visit the local traditional market and Hamzah Batik for one stop souvenir shoppings and cafe also cabaret show in Hamzah batik 3rd floor. Search Hamzah Batik/Raminten Cabaret review.

I love this place. About 40 small antique stores all crammed together in one spot. Amazing inexpensive shopping with great finds for a good eye. I could easily spend 3 hours browsing. Great for wayang golek (wooden puppets), topeng (masks), statues, and great old strange artifacts and signs. A must stop!!!

But I found more than what I expect. You can find all sorts of late 19th and early 20th century items, from framed mirror, gramophone, LP, laser discs, ceramics plates, old coins and stamps, furnitures, even luggages. But visitor that plan to buy things, better be equipped with the skill to haggle and bargain. It certainly fun for me.
